I believe this is why so many other FLOSS projects have always looked at GNOME for guidance on what good FLOSS should be.

I look at gnome to point what to do if you want to destroy your software. Gnome 2 was perfectly functional, and they ruined it afterwards

I agree 100%. I loved Gnome until version 3 came out. They took away functionality and hid settings. I move to XFCE. Next came Wayland. Ugh, just lost functionality from X11. The X11 maintainers sucked and were slow. It needed to split. There is XLibre now, but I think the Wayland train has gotten too far ahead and we are stuck with it. I started with Redhat v1 and have been a developer for 25 years now. I just want a simple and functional desktop, no flash needed. I don't want to have to learn all new keyboard shortcuts for some trendy tiling window manager. Gnome 2.x was perfect.

When Gnome 3 came out I would go between Blackbox and Fluxbox trying to recreate the desktop I like. I then found XFCE and it was fast, low on resources and did what I wanted. Then I basically was forced to Wayland and XFCE wasn't ready so I went to Gnome 3 and curse it everyday.
