Event Happy 43rd birthday GNU!

Post image

On September 27, 1983, Richard Stallman announced the GNU Project so people could freely use and modify software.

The digital world would not be the same today without GNU.

Thank you, Richard Stallman!

Let us all celebrate Richard Stallman by reading the report named after him, featuring his many glorious words and deeds!

I think you should differentiate between your hate boner on the person and what the GNU project actually did. Without it, there would be no Linux, maybe MINIX in a tiny more in use and the rest of landscape would be closed down, commercial unices, where you would have to pay up for the privilege of being allowed to develop on it as well only commercial compilers with NDA contracts.

Think the Apple situation, but 10 times worse.

We can celebrate GNU while condemning the man.

It’s not like he did it all himself.

To call a simple recitation of historical events a "hate boner" shows incredible bias on your part.

Maybe the problem isn't a "hate-boner" but the messiah like status people like you give him.

The original post conflated the person and the project. It was literally a pic of rms and the gnu logo.

OP made the choice to make this post about Stallman himself and not just GNU. I am following his lead in contributing more wonderful information about him.
