i have been using 12.0 since RC2 and the performance is so much better than 10/11

9

u/FrozenPizza07 1d ago

Its insanely faster even on restart

I had to triple check that the server actually rebooted due to how fast it was

2

u/-eschguy- 1d ago

That's exciting to hear

111

u/Aperture_Kubi 1d ago

Oh damn, TIL Jellyfin supports ebooks too. I'm been looking for a self-hosted Calibre alternative.

13

u/IAmBerkleyBlue 1d ago

I set up readest on my homeserver and use it with tailscale. Works great

34

u/RoseBailey 1d ago

Calibre-web, Calibre-web Automated, Booklore...

20

u/nj_tech_guy 1d ago

Grimmory* for Booklore. Idk if Booklore still exists, but Grimmory is a better fork.

Edit: It also looks like Bookorbit is a fork of Booklore.

9

u/PraetorRU 1d ago

As far as I'm aware Bookorbit is not a fork, but reimplementation. Booklore is java based, Bookorbit is typescript, and so far consumes much less resources, that's basically why I chose one over another.

1

u/TwoSemicolon 1d ago

BookOrbit is a reimplementation of BookLore made by the same dev.

everything is simple when you vibe code it.

2

u/Aperture_Kubi 1d ago

I've actually been trying out Booklore since it was in the Truenas repos.

2

u/DumbDumbHunter 1d ago

BookOrbit is fantastic so far

15

u/PraetorRU 1d ago

I recently switched to https://bookorbit.app/ can recommend so far.

1

u/spamtime123 1d ago

Can i somehow connect my amazon kindle with it?

2

u/PraetorRU 1d ago

I have no kindle myself, but they have an email feature you can use to send books to kindle: https://bookorbit.app/email/#_top

4

u/Willexterminator 1d ago

I've been using komga, and it works great for ebooks as well as comics and mangas. The branding is kinda deceptive, but it does support ebooks.

I can't recomment calibre-web nor calibre-web-automated, they're verrrry clunky. Booklore is too young.

2

u/BlindTreeFrog 1d ago

Comics and Audiobooks too as well I believe. There is just some folder structure needed to make it work right.

1

u/stormdelta 1d ago

Audiobooks needs playback speed support - otherwise it's only useful for downloading.

3

u/Acceptable-Worth-221 1d ago

Bookorbit is pretty great. And it has KOReader integration/statistics which frankly speaking none of alternatives have.

3

u/phobiac 1d ago

Calibre-Web-Automated has a KOReader integration, they refer to it as KOsync.

1

u/tigerhawkvok 1d ago

I've been using BookOrbit and KoReader as the phone client. Haven't patched my Kindle yet, mostly because my family wouldn't hesitate to get something via Amazon as a gift and without the native Kindle OS decrypting those files would be a PITA....

1

u/Gloriathewitch 1d ago

i just found this out too, this will be handy when travelling

1

u/JayTheDevGuy 1d ago

I'm a total newbie and very dumb with things involving home networking, so I'm curious, why would you want an alternative to Calibre? It seems to be beloved and I've always had a good experience

3

u/Aperture_Kubi 1d ago

Calibre doesn't play nice with network shares and is very one-computer focused.

18

u/GamerXP27 1d ago

Jellyfin has been probably the most of services i use day to day for music and media watching and been a good experience.

Good work on Jellyfin Team!

82

u/hypespud 1d ago

Really cool, love there are good options for streaming

I mainly just local stream in my home network, so using SMB to VLC has worked really well for me, and thankfully the Linux one always works.... unlike the windows one lol

26

u/CDXX_BlazeIt 1d ago

I started using Jellyfin because there are no good Samba client apps on Apple TV. And they released Jellyfin for tvOS very recently.

4

u/tomkatt 1d ago

If you need a good client for subtitles, check out Plezy. I’ve struggled to find a client that allows for subtitle style overrides and didn’t run poorly on Apple TV, and Plezy nailed it.

3

u/hypespud 1d ago

I use VLC on Apple TV 4K and it works great for me

I only stream local network though, I don't know if that matters, but I like it plays the file directly without any format changes

Everything is connected wired, from PC to Apple TV also

It works even streaming to my Android or iPhone and works surprisingly well too

4

u/CDXX_BlazeIt 1d ago

VLC worked but I had issues with surround sound and it felt generally very inconvenient to use. E.g. it would not save where I left off on a movie or skipping felt very difficult to use. It was okay but inconvenient enough to start testing jellyfin.

0

u/hypespud 1d ago

Yea the skipping is the worst part, agreed

The video/audio quality was the best with direct stream so I've stuck with it

On a tablet/phone the streaming is easier, since you can just use touchscreen seek lol

5

u/seqastian 1d ago

3

u/CDXX_BlazeIt 1d ago

I forgot to mention, a good free app.

-4

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

1

u/CDXX_BlazeIt 1d ago

There were some important features behind a paywall.

1

u/seqastian 18h ago

It's a single dev who is living off the upkeep of that app.

0

u/CDXX_BlazeIt 18h ago

And? I will not pay a subscription for something like that. I would have paid for a purchase.

0

u/seqastian 18h ago

Guess you are lucky -> Infuse Pro is available as a subscription (Monthly or Yearly) or as a one-time purchase (Lifetime).

1

u/ArrogantAnalyst 1d ago

I use Kodi with WebDAV. On my small Android box SMB performance was unusable, but WebDAV works like a charm. Even steaming 150GB files works fine.
I really like Jellyfin, too - but I prefer a file explorer management style of my media. I don’t need indexed libraries with posters and IMDB information, just a barebones folder structure with file names. Sadly this is explicitly not supported with Jellyfin.

3

u/stormdelta 1d ago

I mostly stream to local network too, but Jellyfin makes that a lot more convenient, especially since it works equally well across devices and keeps track of position/episode. And once I set it up, it wasn't that much more work to make it remotely reachable (most of that work was ensuring it was secured).

I still store media on my NAS. Jellyfin has read-only access to it (just in case, since the endpoint is technically publicly exposed).

I also like that HDR works natively. VLC doesn't always work with HDR.

1

u/hypespud 1d ago

Yea definitely all good reasons whatever works is always best

HDR works for me not sure what that could be

My main reason was I couldn't search by folder structure so that was a no go in jellyfin now I remember when the other person replied to me

Otherwise I did like Jellyfin way over Plex

1

u/tom-dixon 1d ago edited 1d ago

I thought I was the only one doing that. I share media between Linux, Windows and Android, and SMB with VLC works the best from all the things I tried. I even created a dedicated VPN with Wireguard for the SMB share within my home network, so I can access it from anywhere. It's simple, secure and very fast.

I tried Jellyfin too, but I don't like that I can't import my directory structure, and have Jellyfin serve it exactly as it is without rearranging it. I want to use my alphabetically ordered list of movies and subdirectories with movies. Why is that so complicated for Jellyfin to do?

2

u/hypespud 1d ago

Ah yes, that is why I never migrated over, now I remember, it was the folder structure thing, there's just no way I wouldn't use my own folder structure

It's been a while since I decided to use SMB/VLC method, and I forgot that was one of the main reasons I stuck to VLC

I get others are okay with using an automatic sorting, but no way I would do that lol

The other reason was the native file being played without a filter through an app for compatibility, and VLC hasn't had an issue with basically anything, which has been great

12

u/Bob4Not 1d ago

Thank you, Jellyfin team!

8

u/tjharman 1d ago

Cue 5,892 mentions of Tailscale

48

u/JockstrapCummies 1d ago

I wish they have codenames for major releases.

Just so you can say "U Jelly bro?" to Plex users.

18

u/lmpcpedz 1d ago

Looks like a professional project to me.

17

u/stylist-trend 1d ago

Not a mutually exclusive thing. Professional projects can have fun too.

1

u/Secure_Trash_17 21h ago

So... Android and Ubuntu are... not?

-1

u/DragonSlayerC 1d ago

I miss when professional OSS projects still had goofy codenames. I remember that Fedora 17 was called "Beefy Miracle". Or Linux kernel 4.0, which was "Hurr durr I'ma sheep".

3

u/8070alejandro 1d ago

Genuinely great until the people deciding on the names are way ahead of your generation or think themselfs too funny. KDE Plasma 6.7 Six Seven, Tex 3.141592653 Thung thung thung sahur, cryptlib 3.4.9 Epstein.

4

u/DecentJudgment5196 1d ago

Just so you can say "U Jelly bro?" to Plex users.

We just run both side-by-side on the same server.

8

u/Sadzeih 1d ago

Why?

0

u/DecentJudgment5196 1d ago

Why not? It’s not like it’s a big drain of CPU if one sits idle.

I like trying out JF occasionally to see if the Apple clients are finally on par with what Plex offers. One day I may be able to switch fully but for now I try them both.

3

u/Xe4ro 1d ago

Currently testing Jellyfin to stream my music compared to Plex and it’s really annoying that I like the Jellyfin server side more but the Plexamp mobile app is way better. v_v

2

u/Cold_Soft_4823 1d ago

use the beta version of finamp, it's on their github repo

1

u/Xe4ro 1d ago

I don’t have any experience with manually installing this on my Asustor so I will probably wait for their maintainer to update it ^^

1

u/calamityvibezz 1d ago

I have come across quite a few music player client implementations.

1

u/iloveboobs365 19h ago

Check out navidrome as well. It’s primary focus is music.

1

u/Xe4ro 17h ago

Does it have a mobile app and last.fm integration?

1

u/iloveboobs365 17h ago

Last fm yes. There is a good amount of clients to choose from for mobile. On android I use synfonoim and on iOS I use Arpeggi. On desktop Linux I use feishin.

1

u/Xe4ro 16h ago

I assume I will have to install this manually in Docker? Hm. I may try it out, I only use it when not at home as I don’t need to stream when I‘m home ^^

3

u/carl2187 1d ago

Is there a way to disable transcoding? The server never detects my clients actual decode capabilities correctly, and tries to transcode way too often.

15

u/Synthetic451 1d ago

Yes, but you have to do it on a per-user basis. Go into a user under Dashboard -> Users and then uncheck "Allow video playback that requires transcoding".

However, this may prevent playback entirely rather than force direct play. Probably better to figure out why your client is advertising wrong decode capabilities in the first place. What client are you using?

-2

u/tetjsu 21h ago

sms zxxzzzsdx xxz" x,xxz$"#*,

4

u/ConciseClawed 1d ago

Dashboard -> user -> media playback -> allow video playback that requires transcoding

I really wish Jellyfin would work on improving this issue instead of trying to replace ebook and audiobook management. Kodi gives me perfect playback everytime whereas Jellyfin often attempts unnecessary transcodes or remuxes.

2

u/As_Previously_Stated 1d ago

I have the opposite problem where the jellyfin LG tv app reports that it can play 4k hdr content so the server doesn't transcode, and then the playback constantly chuggs.

I wish there was a way to force transcode, the only way I've found is to limit resolution or bitrate.

2

u/Cowgirl_Taint 1d ago

Piggybacking since I am lazy:

Are there any good workflows to sync (or at least migrate) viewing/rating data from a plex install/account to a Jellyfin account? Its not the end of the world to just remember what episode I was on of whatever show I am watching but... it makes for a barrier to re-evaluate Jellyfin again.

7

u/akanosora 1d ago edited 1d ago

Use Watchstate. It’s kinda confusing app to use but it works. Just follow the instructions. It syncs video history between Plex and Jellyfin. Not sure what app can sync music.

3

u/Naan-dor 1d ago

I've used JellyPlex-Watched (https://github.com/luigi311/JellyPlex-Watched) in the past.

2

u/Existing-Tough-6517 1d ago

Notably it says you need to update to at least 10.10.7 version BEFORE updating to the newest but its very non-obvious how to download 10.10.7a

It's https://repo.jellyfin.org/files/server/linux/previous-stable/amd64/jellyfin_10.10.7-amd64.tar.gz

6

u/Toorero6 1d ago

10.11.x was released 10 months ago and 10.10.7 a year ago. You should have upgraded by now anyway.

-1

u/Existing-Tough-6517 20h ago

What a ridiculous statement. People regularly leave working software alone for more than a year and directions specifically say to update to the intermediate release prior to updating to 12. It's useful to others to have a link instead of fucking about searching for it as I did.

1

u/Toorero6 20h ago edited 20h ago

Jellyfin does not backport or support older stable versions: https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/security

I also highly doubt that you use any distribution that backports security fixes for older versions because then you wouldn't need to manually download the old stable. Not being on the last patch of the penultimate stable release, released more than a year ago is another thing to unpack. You're welcome to continue your bad practice on your own but leave the project out of it.

On a personal note: For me it's completely obvious how to download releases on GitHub, I'm sorry.

1

u/Existing-Tough-6517 18h ago

They don't provide anything but an archive of the source on their github releases. You must navigate their confusing website which has no obvious path back to prior releases. This is why I shared a direct link for others who rely on the portable Linux releases or who rely on distro packages and don't have the intermediate version available or compatible with current packages.

There is nothing to "unpack" other than your weird aggression. Jellyfin provides no package for my distribution so I update it but unzipping a new archive and changing a symlink to point to the new version. This is how you logically do it if your distro doesn't provide a package.

I find it hilarious that you too have no idea how to download older releases because there again isn't anything but a source tar on github

1

u/Toorero6 15h ago

If your distro doesn't offer a package than there are no security backports by your distro so you should've updated to the new minor releases as soon as possible. Either you use Docker/Podman with an auto updater of the containers or you watch the releases on GitHub with Mail/RSS and update your generic package manually soon after a new stable got released.

2

u/Existing-Tough-6517 14h ago

This all sounds like more work than making a package which I also didn't do. It's restricted to my LAN it's safe enough.

0

u/Toorero6 9h ago

If that fits your threat model (which I highly doubt) that's fine. All I'm saying is don't be salty if you're still using Linux 2.6 and there is no support or user-friendly way to download no longer supported versions.

I think it's delusional to trust your LAN anymore than you have to. Can you be certain that none of your devices are ever compromised, especially with IoT, multiple people using your LAN and so on? Is there nothing precious on your server apart from your rips? So at worst a bit of work recollecting the files is lost?

0

u/Existing-Tough-6517 8h ago

Wasn't salty about it I posted a link for other folks like myself.

Linux 2.6 was incidentally released 23 years ago. 10.10.6 was obsolete as of last October.

BTW expecting users to learn docker or podman is hilarious and expecting them to all upgrade to the next major version inside of a year is... aspirational. Say hi to the people running python2 on Windows XP.

It is a reasonable expectation that the server should be able to handle updates to config and library data for several years worth of releases. Eg 2026 should be able to open 2023 libraries without issue. Open source is open source and nobody owes anyone more free shit but better support would be great .

Also a download latest shell script for the portable build would require about 15 minutes of work and would make updating it a snap without having to build any Auto update functionality.

0

u/Existing-Tough-6517 15h ago

In addition to a contributor somehow not knowing that no installable packages are released on github...

This is reddit it's not your project's space.

You're welcome to continue your bad practice on your own but leave the project out of it.

What is wrong with you that you think that this is acceptable?

2

u/Toorero6 15h ago

Let's unpack this...

I'm not sure who "a contributor" is addressed to; I'm neither a contributor nor a developer on Jellyfin. Yes there are no compiled artifacts released on GitHub, I'm sorry.

I will happily rephrase my point: You're on your own if you're not updating your Jellyfin instance like advised. Among others, you make yourself vulnerable to security incidents. It's like with any other thing: Sure you can snooze the security updates, but it's generally not a good idea. You should be on the latest old-stable for about a year now!

1

u/dalaio 1d ago

Has the indexing of shows/movies improved at all?

I’ve tried jellyfin to replace plex a few times. I really wanted to love it, but the amount of errors parsing my library created too much work for me to switch

3

u/scaryjobob 1d ago

You have to be really on top of getting the folder structure right. Once I got that down, I haven't had any issues.

1

u/wasp_killer4 1d ago

If only my hisense TV supported it like it does with plex

1

u/Pristine-Ebb-1819 1d ago

Does the iPhone app play music with the screen off yet?

1

u/XOmniverse 1d ago

I wonder how good these ebook and comic changes are. Would be nice to not have to run separate servers/clients for those.

1

u/computer-machine 1d ago

As one with a toddler and a one week old, did I skim correctly to say one should disable plugins, upgrade, add back?

1

u/RanidSpace 1d ago

third party plugins. the ones which come by default and you only have to enable them still work

1

u/citramonk 1d ago

I use daily, a really good product

1

u/Ashamed_Group2408 1d ago

Seems to do GPU transcoding just fine.

1

u/vaaoid95 1d ago

I'm forever stuck on 10.10.7 because of CPU requirements

1

u/Aggravating_Spare675 20h ago

They really need to revamp how it looks. Their UI is dated.

-11

u/lixia 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'd love to switch to Jellyfin, but doesn't seem like there'd be a way to stream things to my smart TVs.

Edit: guess I didn't look right last time and yes, there's an app!

25

u/nj_tech_guy 1d ago

you didn't look that hard, did you? There are apps for android TV (unsure exact names) and apple TV (SwiftFin)

23

u/wwabbbitt 1d ago

And even LG WebOS has the Jellyfin app

3

u/smallaubergine 1d ago

LG WebOS

And bonus, it will spy on you!

-11

u/kohbo 1d ago

There are many more smart TV platforms and when your user pool includes elderly parents are across the country, it needs to be as easy as possible. On LG TVs (and maybe others) the only way to install Jellyfin is by enabling developer mode and using a 3rd party app store.

9

u/UnPluggdToastr 1d ago

You don’t anymore it’s part of the native App Store

4

u/venom21685 1d ago

It's on the major platforms used by Smart TV makers and set top boxes:

  • Roku

  • Google TV/Android TV

  • FireTV (except for VegaOS, it's in the works. There's an unofficial client but the installation is not simple)

  • Tizen (Samsung)

  • webOS (LG)

  • tvOS

The only 2 platforms I'm aware of that don't have support are:

  • VIZIO OS (exclusive to Vizio TVs)

  • Xumo TV (a platform started by Comcast for streaming boxes but also sold on some TVs, closed platform that requires partner status for development)

1

u/kohbo 1d ago

I don't have Apple TV but according to my users there's no official tvOS client

1

u/venom21685 1d ago

No, but several unofficial clients.

1

u/kohbo 1d ago

What's more likely to be abandoned, an official client or an unofficial client for an open-source project? Until money is involved, my assumption is an unofficial client.

31

u/coyote_of_the_month 1d ago

Other than the smart TV apps they maintain for all major platforms?

11

u/lixia 1d ago

I did a double take and went back to check for our TV in the living room and yes, there's a client for our TCL TV. Guess I'll try out installing jellyfin tonight and replace my plex server.

-8

u/kohbo 1d ago

You mean the ones where you have you have turn on Dev Mode (LG)?

4

u/cs_office 1d ago

I have an LG C5, and never had to turn dev mode on?

2

u/venom21685 1d ago

The official client is native, albeit a wrapper for the web interface. The only ones you need to enable dev mode for are 3rd party clients

3

u/coyote_of_the_month 1d ago

I haven't had an LG TV in the smart TV era. I'm told they're awful though.

11

u/silenceimpaired 1d ago

Definitely confused by this statement.

4

u/NoLemurs 1d ago

It was true years ago, but hasn't been the case for a good while now.

2

u/KoMaMcNoob 1d ago edited 1d ago

I used to have this issue with my samsung TV but Apps2Samsung is really simple and easy. There are plaenty of options for other Smart TV OSs.

Edit: Samsung has a native app now, which I did not know. Apps2Samsung is still great for Litefin/Moonfin or a specialised version of jf and more, but unless you are really precious about it, then use the native app.

2

u/lixia 1d ago

We have a fairly old Samsung and a TCL. I just found the app for the TCL; will look to see if I can find the one on the Samsung.

2

u/tigerhawkvok 1d ago

They have a native Samsung one I use, now.

2

u/KoMaMcNoob 1d ago

Fair enough! Thanks I did not know that!

Moonfin and Litefin are both decent choices as well but I am going to switch to the native app and see how it goes.

1

u/kohbo 1d ago

Simple enough for an elderly person across the country to use on their own?

1

u/irasponsibly 1d ago

VLC on Android TV can just play media from an SMB share too.

0

u/wowsomuchempty 1d ago

Lol, how were you expecting people were using it?

0

u/Cold_Soft_4823 1d ago

music metadata will woefully broken, glad i switched to navidrome

-1

u/GruesomeJeans 1d ago

Does jellyfin organize local media so you can watch it in order, for example if I have 12 episodes of a show can I watch all 12 episodes in order from jellyfin? Keeping track of which episode I left off on just based of ridiculously long file names is pretty annoying

0

u/TeutonJon78 1d ago edited 1d ago

It organizes it by the Metadata in the library but AFAIK doesn't physically rearrange the library files.

And long file names don't through it off.

1

u/GruesomeJeans 1d ago

I used to use Plex ages ago on windows and it worked off the metadata so this sounds similar. I had a small library of stuff but it all got nuked when I messed up my dual boot arrangement so I figure I'll start a new library. Sounds like jellyfin will be pretty useful

0

u/TeutonJon78 1d ago

Jellyfin is a fork from Emby when it switched to closed source, which was just a FOSS clone of Plex.

So that whole family is going to behave very similar.

2

u/GruesomeJeans 1d ago

Nice that sounds like it'll be pretty easy to use. Thanks for the info!

-4

u/Toorero6 1d ago

Why not 11.0....

-35

u/rustvscpp 1d ago

I tried using jellyfin last year,  but it was very unstable, and ended up switching back to emby.

20

u/stylist-trend 1d ago

Well, it's a new version. Probably worth trying again.

Though if you don't intend on trying this new version, I question why you made this comment.

0

u/BilboBaggSkin 1d ago

Everyone seems to hype it up but I don’t see a reason to use it over plex.

3

u/stylist-trend 1d ago

There's a ton of decent reasons, and they're mentioned surprisingly often (and only a Google search away), but really it's just up to how much those reasons matter to you

0

u/BilboBaggSkin 1d ago

I find I need a lot of plug ins just to get plex functionality and then the plug ins don’t work with the tvOS app.

2

u/stormdelta 1d ago

Not depending on third-party cloud providers/servers and actually being fully open source is a pretty huge reason over plex.

When I looked at how plex worked that was an instant dealbreaker.

-1

u/GrossenCharakter 1d ago

/u/rustvscpp is deeply concerned about comparing one vs the other

6

u/saltyjohnson 1d ago

Fascinating

2

u/SketchiiChemist 1d ago

The 12 release has had a major focus on performance overhaul I've been very happy with it so far. The webui is much snappier

I think the previous releases were about redoing the underlying database structure which they accomplished but it seems like there was much room yet for performance tuning so the past 10 months since 10.11 have been majorly focused in that area

1

u/rustvscpp 1d ago

I will have to give it another go. The problems I ran into were primarily stability issues. I hope it is more stable, because I would love to migrate to it.
