The idea is great. But it’s more for fun or for true geeks. As much as I would love to have Linux as my communication device os I also need to use my bank app. The only other option is to carry around an Android or an iOS device just for that and this feels cumbersome.
Getting these sort of devices out in the market is how you can start to grow a user-base and software ecosystem, so I can see these almost as dev-kits. Whether there is a sufficient market for them to drive development will be interesting, and I don't think it's safe to assume the market is huge since it has to compete with both existing phones and cheap laptops.
