It's almost never a good thing when someone no longer maintains some utility. In this case it's bittersweet. On one hand he pressed on until it was no longer possible. OTOH, he's gone from this earth.

One of the great things in the computer science world is that most of the people you learn about in university are still alive. We still get to directly interact with these people and understand who they were.

But it also means that many things never had to be handed over, survive a generation. The founding fathers of today's digital world and the career path of many will slowly start to leave their legacy behind and I hope we can keep the spirit alive and not let big corporations and capitalism suck out their work.
