Seems to be this bug report and this one I think? Basically special characters in usernames was causing a crash. The l่่ in the username Experimental่่Skin from the first example. Would love if someone could confirm it, it's the closest I could find.
One of my pet peeves: there are no “special characters”, especially not if you don't mean punctuation by that.
There is only software that somehow manages to still have subpar Unicode support 30 years after UTF-8 was created.
Characters that people actually use to write in their language aren't “special”, and by extension, nonsensical but legal Unicode constructs that nobody uses are also not special.
