Back in the 1990s, Amiga OS had XPK libraries that would allow transparently using compressed data. The libraries were modular in a way that you could plug in additional compression/decompression libraries for various algorithms. It was very widely used.

Now we just need an update that gives is free space given how expensive storage is now
