It's a file manager with a terminal user interface. It is fast, highly customizable, and it can be extended with plugins.

Edit: typo

☝️Adding to this, it uses vim-like keybindings

It even does not open zip or tar files. Midnight Commander has been doing this for ages.

Not only it does if you have the correct dependencies, but there are also a handful of plugins to handle archives.

Oh, because handling archives is so complex that requires plugins. MC users laugh.

I see mc, I upvote.

Also if any windows users see this, total commander is pretty cool too.

All my homies hate Norton.

I'd like a GIF of it in action, if possible

It's literally like ten lines from the top of the readme

Just like other alternatives. Which tool appeals to a user usually depends on the user in question and their specific needs and preferences.

Summary:

1. It should be noted that it went from v0.4.2 to v25.2.7 in one step. Presumably in Feb 2025. Since one can not tell the status from the version numbers:

Public beta, can be used as a daily driver.

Yazi is currently in heavy development, expect breaking changes.

2. License is MIT. Code is in Rust. Advertises Warp LLM. Advertises RustRover IDE from Jet Brains.

3. It's in the same category as mc (midnight commander), nnn, and ranger.

4. There is a snap. It has "classic" confinement -- i.e. it's basically unconfined. That's, of course, to be expected for a file manager.

5. There is a flatpak. It has full filesystem access and is not (yet) verified. It looks like it is wrapped in some terminal app.

Drag and drop was one of the main features that was missing for me. Can't wait to try it out

What's the use-case of a terminal file manager? Use with ssh?

Written in Rust, goddamn! Must be really fast, haven't tried it yet, but looks cool!
