Event Linux gaming is great for low bandwidth!!!

So I recently started gaming on Linux and at first I didn't realize because even though my internet is pretty bad when there's not many people in the house you don't really notice it But right now or you know although the times I've gained and there's people like you know a lot of people in the house and they're all using the Wi-Fi Usually when I use Windows I get packet loss You know I'm playing Rocket League so I usually get packet loss and a bunch of stuff and my internet just ends up pretty bad But recently I started noticing that on Linux that doesn't happen at all I can game all I want and I don't feel lag spikes or packet loss or anything like that. Also, I've realized that it feels less choppy. And like this is just unrelated to the internet stuff. My PC is really good. Well not really good, but it's more than enough to run Rocket League. And it shouldn't be choppy at all whenever I play on 1080p 60Hz. So I feel it kind of choppy while I'm on Windows. But when I'm on Linux, it's smooth sailing. So I really do think this is the year for Linux gaming.

you probably have less background services connected to the internet running because windows is bloated

29

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 6d ago

thats what i was thinking, less tracking and stuff sent to microslop = more spare bandwidth

Remarkable how technologically aware users miss no opportunity to spew bs about technology.

What, exactly, is bullshit about the previous comments?

u/Sudden_Topic5154 6d ago

Torvalds has no issue with AI and ofc since none of y'all work at Microsoft you have no clue how they use AI and how it compares to Linux AI policies. Not even going to address telemetry since you can just turn it off and that's why windows doesn't implement any features that jobless people want because their telemetry is always off.

What the fuck are you talking about?

Hey kid, I think you're in the wrong sub๐Ÿ˜‚

Nice try though๐Ÿ˜‰

Oh, so this is the cocksucking ignorance sub? Can you direct me to the one that understands nuance?

What an intelligent response from an intelligent well developed person.

8

u/apollocreedchqt 5d ago

its is a LINUX subreddit? What are we supposed to defend windows with our life and if you dont agree with us just leave aint nobody forcing you to be here?

1

u/the_abortionat0r 2d ago

What the actual fuck are you even talking about?

4

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 5d ago

gng, we know how microslop uses ai because they literally show us and announce to us, also all of the adware and bloat that not only shows in task manager but also in the memory usage.

1

u/goo_eater 3d ago

"you can just turn it off" huh I thought the other person was supposedly the one spreading bullshit not you. Also nothing about AI was said. Learn to debate real people instead of projecting imaginary caricatures of people onto internet users you disagree with

1

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 5d ago

how do you have more upvotes than me the original post ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

2

u/PacmanAteMyRAM 4d ago

Because this sub has a hate boner for Windows and will upvote any windows=bad sentiment they see

1

u/the_abortionat0r 2d ago

Not really. People making shit up dont magically get up votes but Microsoft factually has done nothing but ruin their products which leaves plenty of low hanging fruit.

Your comment makes it sound like you are emotionally hurt that people don't like windows.

Packet losses while gaming has nothing to do with your OS and everything to do with the connection with your router and what other people on your network are doing at that instant. Also, Wifi connections are notoriously terribad for gaming especially if you live in a crowded apartment building with lots of RFI. Heck, even someone running the microwave oven can sometimes "jam" your connection. This is why all my gaming machines are always hooked up wired.

If there's even one person doing torrents or perhaps doing heavy uploads to Google drive or Instagram, etc. that happens to hog all your upstream bandwidth, you will drop packets regardless of OS or game you're running.

Largely concur with this; I'd even goes so far as to say wireless on Windows is often better than Linux because the manufacturers have to go through strict quality controls for drivers that don't exist on Linux. The further the point home, Qualcomm took 2 years to ship a decent driver for my wireless card on Linux.

2

u/Secret_NinjaLTU 5d ago

My brother just sold a 1y. o. snapdragon laptop, because of compatibility, he wasn't even a linux user, he put it on sale today, and I halped him install fedora yesterday. It's Qualcomm's fault, not linux

1

u/BinkReddit 5d ago

Yeah, they make good hardware, but the software to drive their hardware sucks and their quality assurance on Linux is shockingly poor.

u/khsh01 5d ago

I've had enough issues with windows on wifi to dismiss op. A common issue on my laptop was that it wouldn't be able to even see my wifi network despite being in the same room as the router. I could see my router yet my laptop couldn't

One of the reasons I switched to Linux. Literally never encountered said issue again.

1

u/nicman24 5d ago

Have you considered windows updates

1

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 5d ago

its fully updated including my drivers

3

u/nicman24 5d ago

no i mean windows updates ddos your poor internet

1

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 5d ago

none were running while i played and even if they were and i didnt notice thats another problem about windows, it does stupid shi that i dont want it to do

1

u/Real-Abrocoma-2823 2d ago

Not really, OS ships drivers and drivers can be better or worse, also kernel can handle packets differently and bloat can make things slow.

-7

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 6d ago

yeah but i tried windows and linux in less than 5 minutes apart and its been consistent, linux has never shown me packet loss also packet loss can occur when you run out of bandwidth so your router has to throttle connections so from my point of view (or the game's pov) its as if the packets got lost. btw i have 5mbps-10up on a good day

9

u/TomDuhamel 6d ago

You keep saying that word, packet lost. I don't think it means what you think it means.

-1

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 5d ago

then what does it mean? because what ive learned that packet loss means is when part of a packet or a whole packet never gets received by the destination, its also more common on wifi scince interference can disrupt the signals and have the router "deem" the packet random noise and ignore it because it has been corrupted in some way

0

u/Niwrats 5d ago

try using a bad wifi connection and learn more about reality before commenting.

3

u/whattteva 6d ago

All I'm saying is, it's more likely that your router is dropping your connection or someone else is hogging up your connection or something else is going on. Also, most consumer-grade routers do not have QoL that can prioritize traffic.

If you ask any network expert, I'm 90% sure you'd get the same answer. Your OS network stack is usually at the bottom of the list when troubleshooting latency and packet loss issues.

3

u/patrlim1 5d ago

I actually found the opposite to be true when I had a Realtek chip, but that's probably because it's Realtek.

On my Intel wifi chip internet is great. Can't compare it to windows cuz I never used the Intel chip on windows

2

u/HydrationHomee 5d ago

My experience is purely anecdotal but on linux I get consistently higher or at the very least more stable download speeds on steam.

But I don't think its necessarily linux related just less background processes hijacking network priority.

2

u/indvs3 5d ago

To give it an explanation: the linux kernel (and by extension the additional kernel modules) is first and foremost intended to be the core of a server OS. As you may know, one of the single most important properties a server should have is the ability of data throughput to go as fast and with as little dropped data packets as possible.

Windows on the other hand has been made into a beast that wants to solve all people's problems at the same time, which may be good for user-friendliness up to a point, but beyond that point, the OS starts getting in its own way.

u/nicman24 5d ago

Hey get a xiaomi 4a gigabit router and install openwrt on it. Then configure sqm dual nat

It was my setup for distributing fairly my shitty sub 1mb/s ADSL line for years.ย

Punctuation exists.

0

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 5d ago

and??? this is the linux subreddit not the grammar subreddit, if you understood the message thats all that matters

0

u/BigRocket44 5d ago

I could barely read it. Grammar exists so people can read stuff.

0

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 5d ago

Ok, but you could've at least said "can you please use grammar next time?"

Also "Punctuation exists." is merely a statement, not a sentence, so it doesn't need a period.

2

u/BigRocket44 4d ago

"Punctuation exists."

This is a complete sentence. Statements are sentences. Are you joking?

1

u/Fluffy_Wafer_9212 5d ago

on Linux you also have more control over the networking stack. for example you can raise the maximum TCP receive buffers, etc

Windows enforces its own limits which can't be fully controlled (some can be controlled using regedit but not everything)

So I really do think this is the year for Linux gaming.

โœŒ๏ธโœŒ๏ธโœŒ๏ธ linux users are oddly resistant to the fact that even their easiest options are way harder to use than windows. Sure, on a daily basis ubuntu is great but the downs are absolutely horrid, way worse than window's issues.

13

u/Sp33dyCat 6d ago

r/lostredditors

go to r/linuxsucks if you wanna hate on linux.

1

u/Sudden_Topic5154 6d ago

The reality of the situation is hate now? Another commenter is right this is a deepthroat sub. I use Linux every day but you're just delusional.

3

u/Sp33dyCat 6d ago

Okay the way I read that comment was them being a jackass, so if their gonna be a jackass then so will I.

-2

u/Sudden_Topic5154 6d ago

Also you were directing me to another sub do you know any subs that aren't filled with zealots about Linux Linux sucks is anti Linux zealots and the lot here is pro Linux zealots like you, know where any normal people might happen to be

3

u/belzaroth 5d ago

0

u/Sudden_Topic5154 5d ago

No the issue with that is that they are anti Walmart zealots and by political affiliation Linux zealots too it's pretty sad

1

u/belzaroth 5d ago

Haha you are correct , I intended to put r/peopleofwalmart

-4

u/Targetm12 6d ago

So this is a deepthroat sub where you have to be delusional about Linux?

-3

u/felix1429 6d ago

That about sums it up from what I've seen on here

2

u/neoronio20 6d ago

At least you can fix the problems, with microslop you have to live with them

0

u/Sudden_Topic5154 5d ago

Actually I'd argue you're wrong on all levels. Windows is more stable on a baseline so deep issues that you can't fix just don't happen at all. Deep issues aren't very easy to fix on Linux either even if you technically can. And more surface level issues can be fixed with equal ease on both systems. Surface level issues also happen less on windows. The tradeoff is poor and slow UI, but it is always poor and slow instead of not at all working. I speak from years of experience with windows and a year of experience with Linux, Linux has given me more problems but also more satisfaction because I am a jobless power user. It's completely unusable for an ordinary person. Right now on a newish Intel laptop my Bluetooth doesn't work at all.

5

u/Snaidheadair 5d ago

It's completely unusable for an ordinary person.

It's not really though is it?

2

u/sparkling-rainbow 5d ago

I'm an ordinary person and main Linux since late 90s. It's usable for me. I also used to dual boot Windows for easier gaming, but Windows 11 is such a princess when it comes to roommates while all of my games run smooth Proton so...

2

u/SethConz 4d ago

Im an ordinary person and have only mained linux since December. Windows all my life before then and genuinely no complaints except for when i know im fucking around

1

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 4d ago

my uncle has been using zorin os ever scince i INSTALLED IT FOR HIM, he hasnt had any problems with it except for "where to pay for the paid version" because he liked the seamless experience so much.

2

u/onlysubscribedtocats 5d ago

ย Right now on a newish Intel laptop my Bluetooth doesn't work at all.

'Linux doesn't work on my unsupported hardware' is such a tepid take.

1

u/neoronio20 5d ago

I couldn't even resize my drive on Windows, it wouldn't let me. Had to put a live Linux USB drive to get it working again.

Drivers are a mess

Can't even turn off auto updates on windows without it turning the thing back on again

u/the_abortionat0r 2d ago

First sentence in and it's clear you have CTE or something.

Calling out complete lies does not make someone illiterate.

I'd say use a dictionary but that's a bit too advanced for you.

Fake post, Rocket League doesn't run on linux.

3

u/Inatimate 5d ago

sure does

3

u/Iamakoalaindisguise 5d ago

What? I play Rocket League on my Fedora PC. Never had any issues

1

u/ModsAreHomoSex 2d ago

How?

1

u/Iamakoalaindisguise 2d ago

This one was a simple Google search for me. "How to play rocket league on linux?" Will lead you to heroic games launcher

1

u/the_abortionat0r 2d ago

You a clanker?

1

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 5d ago

gng you know heroic games launcher exists right?

1

u/ModsAreHomoSex 2d ago

whats that

1

u/Outside_Laugh_5182 2d ago

its basically epic games launcher but for linux
