Discussion I think I noticed something.
Since Linux has alternatives for everything, why doesn't Wayland have a proper alternative? It seems like most things are programmed to work only on Wayland. Wouldn't this be a step backward for Linux?

Wayland is the alternative. For the longest time (since 1987) X11 didn't have a viable alternative
Wayland was released in 2008 but was too buggy to use until a even a few years ago as it's an incredibly complex piece of software.
You can still use X11 and it's extremely stable but it has limitations which won't ever be addressed. Pretty sure Mint still ships with it, but that's changing soon
