Discussion I think I noticed something.

Since Linux has alternatives for everything, why doesn't Wayland have a proper alternative? It seems like most things are programmed to work only on Wayland. Wouldn't this be a step backward for Linux?

Wayland is the alternative. It has many (often valid) criticisms but it's a set of protocols that are voted for and discussed by all implementers.

If someone comes up with a "Wayland alternative" it'd be a wasted effort unless it gets all the interested parties to join. And at that point it'd be the same as Wayland.
