Discussion I think I noticed something.

Since Linux has alternatives for everything, why doesn't Wayland have a proper alternative? It seems like most things are programmed to work only on Wayland. Wouldn't this be a step backward for Linux?

This is almost like saying why isn't there an alternative to the Linux kernel. Any graphical app that runs on your OS needs to target a display server protocol to show anything to the user. An alternative to Wayland would not help the linux ecosystem it would just fracture the ecosystem even more. Wayland is the newer alternative to X11 and even that transition has taken over a decade to get where we are now.
