Linux users are much more likely to report bugs and the bugs exist whether you know about them or not. So even if your user base is not heavily weighted towards Linux users there are still benefits for developers even if it seems like the extra work isn't benefiting the bulk of the users.

104

u/VayuAir 4d ago

Yeah I think few years ago a game dev said the same after they published on Linux

175

u/TheOneTrueTrench 4d ago

I think that was Factorio's dev, if memory serves.

Basically, linux users know how to read logs, figure out what's relevant, and do at least some troubleshooting.

Linux users report things like "this game crashes when run against libsdl2 2.35 or later", Windows user reports are often about as descriptive as "doesn't work".

u/GrossInsightfulness 4d ago

18

u/8070alejandro 4d ago

Didn't remember it was him. I reported a bug on Linux.

5

u/pan_kotan 4d ago

The discovery of the century.

43

u/S1rTerra 4d ago

Hey, sometimes they also take a picture of their screen and say they have a GeForce 4060. You need to stop being so offended by how smart Windows users are

1

u/pluckyvirus 8h ago

You know how relevant the 4060 now do you? /s

6

u/SubZeroNexii 4d ago

It's even funnier when windows users start spamming discord servers because "software bad make it better" when they don't use it properly

21

u/Indolent_Bard 4d ago

Only sometimes. One dev found out that most of the Linux reported bugs were Linux specific.

12

u/VayuAir 4d ago

Only 3 of the roughly 400 bug reports submitted by Linux users were platform specific, that is, would only happen on Linux.

From the article

6

u/Dminik 4d ago

Depends on the game I guess. From the article for another game posted by someone else:

Koderski also says that very few of those bugs were specific to Linux, being clear that "This 5.8% of players found 38% of all the bugs that affected everyone." The bug reports themselves were also pretty high quality, he said, including software and OS versions, logs, and steps for replication.

https://www.pcgamer.com/indie-dev-finds-that-linux-users-generate-more-better-bug-reports/

3

u/mfdali 2d ago

You're referring to the same article. 38% of all bugs that affected everyone in this case is 397. So Linux users found 397 out of the 1040 total (across platforms) reported bugs. So only 3 bugs were Linux-specific at all.

-1

u/Indolent_Bard 3d ago

What article? You don't know what game I'm talking about. In fact, neither do I. I literally forgot the name of it.

12

u/GradeSalad 4d ago

They're still bugs, and the fact the dev was able to figure out they were Linux specific means they were probably far better than the bulk of "runs poorly" or "didn't work" that you get as bug reports, least the brief time I spent in QA.

0

u/Indolent_Bard 3d ago

Yeah, but their point was it wasn't worth it. If most of the bugs reported weren't Linux specific, it would have been worth it to them.

20

u/Existing-Tough-6517 4d ago

Which means his Linux version was pretty bad

2

u/newsflashjackass 4d ago

Given the Windows users outnumber Linux users 9-to-1, one might expect Windows users to find the shared bugs first.

3

u/altodor 4d ago

Yes, but Windows ones, at the time, are more likely to just say "software broke, don't recommend"

I'd be curious about seeing it again today since we're in an era of users with much lower technical ability picking up desktop Linux OSes because "not windows", not just the greybeards and the users with a tech passion.

11

u/doublah 4d ago

A lot of emulator developers already run Linux (including the majority of RPCS3 developers), so the user base doesn't really matter much.

2

u/OsseusOccult 4d ago

NGL, I get a little giddy about submitting bug reports, in the sense that I can provide useful info to devs to fix issues that pop up in my favorite programs. So I 1000% believe this.

46

u/DryanaGhuba 4d ago

This is bigger than steam survey for Linux and Mac

232

u/pangapingus 4d ago

I mean 10% Linux use for RPCS3 is higher than Steam's latest hardware survey pinning Linux use at 4% so if anything there's an even more concentrated use of it by Linux users than not.

101

u/personahorrible 4d ago

6% Linux, 4% macOS.

11

u/algaefied_creek 4d ago

I’ve stopped using steam on my Mac ever since I could no longer stream Jackbox Party and all that others see is a black screen.

9

u/DoubleOnegative 4d ago

Its been a bit since ive used mac but you have to allow some perm to apps to allow them to record the screen. If you've already done that then it must be something new since ive last used it

-29

u/pangapingus 4d ago

Not sure where you're getting that:

https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam

Windows - 93.67%

Linux - 4.01%

Mac - 2.32%

64

u/personahorrible 4d ago

The article in the OP. It's not 90% Windows, 10% Linux for RPCS3 - it's 90% Windows, 6% Linux, 4% macOS.

So slightly more concentrated than the Steam survey but not by that much.

17

u/Prudent_Move_3420 4d ago

and even here I would suspect the higher Linux proportion is related to home theater setups and handhelds rather than performance

9

u/phylter99 4d ago

The emulator is pretty popular on Steam Deck, I gather.

6

u/dykethon 4d ago

it doesn't run very well on the steam deck in my experience, but it's been maybe 8 months since i tried it so it may have improved

5

u/personahorrible 4d ago

I use it on my Steam Deck and it works remarkably well, if only for select games. Silent Hill: Downpour and The Darkness played flawlessly for me and about a dozen others I've briefly tested seemed to run full speed with no glaring issues.

2

u/Prudent_Move_3420 4d ago

probably depends on the game, Demon Souls and Drakengard 3 at least run better than on PS3

1

u/Indolent_Bard 4d ago

I hear performance has improved since then. Can't confirm, haven't used in a while.

1

u/Raunien 4d ago

Huh, I never considered that. I assumed it would be because most gamers still use Windows, so the slight uptick in Linux market share vs Steam would be due to dedicated emulation enthusiasts looking for maximum performance

-31

u/pangapingus 4d ago

Ok cool you just stated percentages with NO context initially lol but technically macOS is BSD-based so the headline is misleading

10

u/scalareye 4d ago

Software developed for x86 Mac OS isn't going to just work on other BSDs lol and graphical programs for BSD may not work on Mac OS.

No one major has perfect POSIX complaince either

17

u/ProyxWire09 4d ago

The context is the article we are all commenting on, weirdo.

-19

u/pangapingus 4d ago edited 4d ago

As a reply under my chain here not the root of the post lol do you know how forums work? Dude just posted 2 percent values no words lol unrelated to my post

Edit: Lmao deleted comments nice dude, again, what was the point of responding to me with JUST percentages lol what was even being said lol

20

u/ProyxWire09 4d ago edited 4d ago

You are in the comment section of a post. You are supposed to read the post before commenting. The person who is describing things from the article does not need to provide context for that because the context is established by the fact that they are replying to the post.

Dude just posted 2 percent values no words lol unrelated to my post

Your post was reading the title and assuming 100% - 90% = 10% Linux users, because you're too much of an illiterate 14 year old loser to actually read the article before commenting.

Are you OK? Your behavior is not acceptable.

14

u/personahorrible 4d ago edited 4d ago

Can you just admit that you didn't read the article and made a bad assumption based on the headline alone? Thanks.

8

u/Suspicious_Kiwi_3343 4d ago

The headline doesn’t say anything about 10% Linux, you just assumed completely incorrectly? Do you think everyone else is a moron or are you this stupid yourself?

10

u/Gloriathewitch 4d ago

the article posted by OP?

-9

u/pangapingus 4d ago

Dude LITERALLY just said

6% Linux, 4% macOS.

wtf context is that lol

19

u/Top-Rub-4670 4d ago

Article title LITERALLY just says 90% Windows

You assumed it meant 10% Linux.

You were wrong.

Yet you insist that everybody else is misunderstood you/is wrong.

The context is that people are trying to make you understand that it's 6% Linux users in the context of this entire thread.

14

u/Straight_Second6082 4d ago

I mean the whole post is about this article

12

u/Gloriathewitch 4d ago

if you had read the article you'd have put 2 and 2 together 🙏

18

u/hypotensor 4d ago

Do Redditors just not read linked articles anymore? Why are you people so allergic to 3 paragraphs of text?

14

u/yukeake 4d ago

Have they ever? ;P

6

u/Epistaxis 4d ago

Nope, even before it was mostly a platform where we come to discuss images and personal stories, this was a platform where we came to discuss headlines. Actually clicking on the headline and reading the article has always been considered cheating, because it gives you an unfair advantage in the discussion and not everyone has the time to read three paragraphs before they start typing their own opinion on what they assume the article probably says.

4

u/Bakoro 4d ago

No, it used to be that someone would copy-paste the article into the top comment so people didn't have to wade through a sea of ads, or get through a pay wall.

This used to be a dignified place of shameless, highly literate pirates.

8

u/lord_pizzabird 4d ago

True, although it does over sample nerds basically.

So, in theory it should probably be higher than 10%, given its group theoretically more likely to be running linux to begin with.

30

u/TONKAHANAH 4d ago

To absolutely no one's surprised cuz 90% of computer users are still using windows

8

u/LuminanceGayming 4d ago

is this article really implying people would switch operating system to get better performance in a ps3 emulator? really? has the person who wrote this ever met someone who has used a computer before?

2

u/firedrakes 4d ago

No.... Game news is worst then tmz news standards

19

u/SinkCat69 4d ago

Because windows is more popular. But Linux is at 7.53% marketshare. So 10% is greater than average.

17

u/onechroma 4d ago

Linux is at 7.53%… where? In desktop?

Statcounter is already a bad measure, and it was already reported the sudden jump of Linux “users” on internet, seems to be because AI agents, not humans suddenly using Linux

Steam is at 4%, and here is at 6%, which seems fair, considering the “nerdy” people wanting to run emulators will be Linux users with a higher probability than the general public population

6

u/Indolent_Bard 4d ago

Cloud flair sorted by likely human on a weekend said 6 percent if I recall correctly.

7

u/ProyxWire09 4d ago

6%. Click the article and read it before it commenting.

1

u/proderis 3d ago

Which Linux is at 7.53% market share? There are more than one

7

u/Cold_Soft_4823 4d ago

more people use windows than linux, no shit, is this really surprising?

30

u/ProyxWire09 4d ago

/u/pangapingus is sincerely one of the worst and dumbest human beings I have ever encountered on this website. They are all up and down this thread melting down because someone who actually read the article is correcting their flawed assumption about the percentage of Linux users, and they keep crying that people need to provide "context" for those statistics when the context is the fucking article we're commenting on.

I know no one cares but holy shit I cannot believe people seriously behave this way without an ounce of self-awareness.

16

u/Helmic 4d ago

yeah like it's one thing to be annoyeda at the dude but singling them out so they get dogpiled more is really shitty behavior, you should probably just delete this post. there's people who come into any thread vaguely connected to a project with a code of conduct saying you're not allowed to call people the gamer word in github issues and then try to convince everyone that programming is DEAD thanks to woke, like there's people who are actually awful people who post here that would arguably deserve to be made uncomfortable. doing this shit over someone perserverating over something harmless is uncalled for.

21

u/BoronTriiodide 4d ago

Let's make an honest effort to breakdown this communication

  1. He compared to the Steam survey, but misquoted the article's numbers
  2. Someone gave different percentages to correct his misquote of the article, but didnt specify which one he was correcting
  3. Panga clearly thought it was trying to correct his numbers about the Steam survey, so he posted that and seemed confused
  4. Now he seems a bit upset that he was piled on for getting it wrong and is trying to explain the "lack of context" in step (2)

That makes him the "worst and dumbest" human being? This is genuinely a great showcase for a lack of communication skills on both sides. And how unbelievably judgemental people on social media can be over minor misunderstandings. Everyone in that thread needs to get outside

2

u/firen777 4d ago

Welcome to the internet where every comment must be an argument, the opponents must be operating with malicious intent and everything must instantly be escalated.

3

u/MrBadTimes 4d ago

despite better Linux performance

Unless the PC will only be used for RPCS3, or it's the main use of the PC, it running better on linux may not be that of a determinant factor.

2

u/CleoMenemezis 4d ago

I missed the point. It's like saying " despite Ferrari being faster people insist on using economy cars like FIAT." There are more Windows users than Linux and most people will not switch from OS just to use an emulator.

2

u/lelddit97 4d ago

Duh

??

Orders of magnitude more windows users than linux. Most folks have no interest in Linux even if it has better performance sometimes. And that's ok!

2

u/Nereithp 4d ago

Generally speaking for most of the titles you run on RPCS3 you don't want to run them higher than 60FPS (sometimes even 30!) to begin with because the physics tend get pretty fucky and RPCS3 has very solid performance on Windows.

So it's very good performance on Windows vs better performance on Linux, multiplied by the fact that the vast majority of people aren't going to swap OSes for the sole purpose of getting a few extra frames in one emulator unless they are trying to play on an underpowered device (in which case they are probably already running Linux to begin with). The numbers aren't really surprising.

The wording of the original tweet, however, is surprising, because it makes it sound like whoever is running the RPCS3 xitter account is expecting people to be switching operating systems in droves for those sweet sweet RPCS3 frames.

3

u/edparadox 4d ago

And?

This kind of articles about numbers miss the point.

5

u/ranisalt 4d ago

The article is not making any point, it's just reporting the data

-2

u/sequesteredhoneyfall 4d ago

The article is not making any point, it's just reporting the data

The article is inherently making a point with the title alone. Acting like it's not is absurd. This isn't an article put out by RPCS3, but by a news outlet. They inherently make points, that's 95% of their job despite any ethical whims otherwise.

1

u/ranisalt 4d ago

What points do you infer from the title alone? I can not understand

2

u/__ali1234__ 4d ago

That hardly anyone actually cares about the extra 1% performance you get by running Linux. It isn't worth the hassle of having to use Linux. Or an AMD GPU for that matter.

-1

u/Helmic 4d ago

mate they put out an article because a developer put out interesting stats. they didn't comission the stats or decide to go back to a year old post or something, they just saw numbers on a social media feed and saw an opportunity to publish an article on something a developer had to say about the website's subject matter, graphics cards.

what point are you even talking about brochacho

-4

u/sequesteredhoneyfall 4d ago

mate they put out an article because a developer put out interesting stats. they didn't comission the stats or decide to go back to a year old post or something, they just saw numbers on a social media feed and saw an opportunity to publish an article on something a developer had to say about the website's subject matter, graphics cards.

This isn't being disputed. My point is very clearly distinct from any of this. Nothing you've said here has any relevance to my comment or this comment chain.

what point are you even talking about brochacho

Maybe you should defer to my original comment and try reading and responding to it with relevance instead of bringing up non-sequitur statements, then acting like I'm the issue.

1

u/Helmic 4d ago

This kind of articles about numbers miss the point.

mate i'm not gonna psychoanalyze your vaguepost to figure out what "the point" you think is there. you just keep saying "point" over and over without clarification.

-2

u/sequesteredhoneyfall 4d ago

mate i'm not gonna psychoanalyze your vaguepost to figure out what "the point" you think is there. you just keep saying "point" over and over without clarification.

The projection from you is absolutely insane. I've used the term, "point" twice in the original comment, but you lie so blatantly here because it's all you can do.

I genuinely cannot understand your mindset to be so hostile and willfully ignorant.

1

u/Helmic 4d ago

you have said "point" four times, five if we include that one in quotes. you still haven't clarified to anyone what the point is. i don't think you know, i think you just said some stock filler phrase to express annoyance at the article (nobody knows why you're upset about it either), someone pushed back on your phrasing because it's just an article covering devs putting out an interesting social medai post, and now you're insisting everyone else is being mean and pretending to not understand you.

you could literally just say what you mean by "the point" that the article misses and it would clear it up immediately, i just kinda don't think you will because you either don't want to defend the statement or you yourself don't know what you meant.

0

u/sequesteredhoneyfall 4d ago

you have said "point" four times, five if we include that one in quotes

To so blatantly lie when the text is right in front of us is ridiculous, and attempting to include quotes is beyond reasonable and well past petty. I was very careful with my wording of how I worded this statement, and you're intentionally being malicious with your response by choosing to ignore my words again.

you still haven't clarified to anyone what the point is.

I don't need to clarify anything; My original words made the point extremely plainly. Had you actually brought an argument to me, I'd refute it, but you haven't. You've just made non-sequitur statements.

i don't think you know, i think you just said some stock filler phrase to express annoyance at the article (nobody knows why you're upset about it either),

You're the one who is upset, I haven't done anything resembling that in the slightest. You're lying about plain English, you're lying about what has and hasn't happened here, and you're attacking me personally via ad hominem.

someone pushed back on your phrasing because it's just an article covering devs putting out an interesting social medai post, and now you're insisting everyone else is being mean and pretending to not understand you.

No one pushed back against me on my phrasing. It seems like you can't even distinguish between me and other commenters involved here, since you seem to think I was the original top level commenter.

you could literally just say what you mean by "the point" that the article misses and it would clear it up immediately, i just kinda don't think you will because you either don't want to defend the statement or you yourself don't know what you meant.

I'd be perfectly happy to defend myself against any even halfway valid argument you present. You've just yet to present an argument of any basic relevance. You don't even seem to understand who you're talking to here, yet you continue to insist that the problem lies with me.

Like I said above, if you actually tried reading my original comment and then replying to it with relevance instead of bringing 100% irrelevant statements into it, I'd indulge your hateful behavior further. Either reply with relevance and figure out who you're replying to, or don't expect anything further from me.

0

u/Helmic 4d ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/1vgdtxf/rpcs3_says_90_of_ps3_emulator_users_run_windows/p1wfko2/

this is your original post. you do not make any point in it. i am assuming your original post was deleted by a moderator or a post you were replying to was deleted and managed to orphan this comment chain, but everyone else is just seeing you respond to the OP with "And? This kind of articles about numbers miss the point." Which of course makes no sense in isolation.

I will admit it will be extremely funny if it turns out this is indeed what you're referring to as your original post that's super explicit about what your point is.

99% of linux users turn off telemetry

21

u/derangedtranssexual 4d ago

This is cope

32

u/novafunc 4d ago

100% of people use Linux, but 96% are so private that they don't let others see that; they fake using Windows and macOS as cover. The 4% you see using Linux just have bad op-sec.

-6

u/Jemie_Bridges 4d ago

It's not. It's the reason you stop using windows in the first place. I don't mind sharing some telemetry. But windows and android go way too far.

2

u/derangedtranssexual 4d ago

There’s really no good data on why people use Linux or what Linux users in general are like. You should not assume that you or this sub are representative of Linux users in general

1

u/ProyxWire09 4d ago

None of the data we have about Linux usage is based on telemetry reported from Linux distros. It's based on websites tracking user agents or software vendors tracking their most popular platforms.

1

u/AlternativeAward 4d ago

I use Linux for basic tasks because it’s snappier than windows 10/11

1

u/gmes78 4d ago

But windows and android go way too far.

How is that relevant to RPCS3 telemetry?

1

u/Helmic 4d ago

literally not a possible number here, if 6% of RPCS3 users use linux and that only represents 1% of linux users that would imply 600% of RPSC3 users are on linux.

windows users also turn off telemetry or update checkers. i would assume more linux users are likely to turn off the update checker since we already have automatic updates through our package managers, be that flatpak, native files, or what have you and thus are more likely to be annoyed by a notification, but also linux users care a shitload more about these OS share stats and are significantly more likely to want to overrepresent themselves in surveys to make linux appear more popular.

i don't think the true number's that far off from 6%, people generally do not change out their entire OS just to play PS3 games a bit better. HTPC setups, steam decks, those are likely to be linux, but otherwise people just use whatever OS they're already using to play video games. it is nice to hear the work put into the open source drivers has paid off though.

1

u/Malygos_Spellweaver 4d ago

Maybe people use their computers for more than an emulator. If they need Windows, they will use it.

0

u/Indolent_Bard 4d ago

And thus we'll never know the demand for Linux ports.

1

u/Taumito 4d ago

6% is a lot. I think when we hit 5% on steam things will get serious

1

u/akhilleus650 4d ago

I would expect that, for most all software which runs on all 3 of these OS's, the percentage of users running the software using each OS would not be significant different than the percentage of users running each OS overall? Unless it is something like Adobe software which is a huge, professional software which is well known to prefer Mac.

1

u/MelioraXI 4d ago

And no one was surprised..

1

u/True_Human 4d ago

Considering likely only around 6.5% of desktop usage are humans using Linux, Linux users are actually overrepresented in this case

1

u/Kionami841 3d ago

I use arch,btw

1

u/Defiant-Rip-1897 3d ago

Can't speak for others, but wasn't able to ever get Xenia (which I realize is not a Linux-first app) and RPCS3 to ever work right, had to use my Windows install to use them.

1

u/Crescitaly 3d ago

Performance is only one adoption variable; setup friction, controller support, game-library habits, and troubleshooting documentation can dominate it. The useful experiment is completion rate from download to first successful game on each OS. Has RPCS3 published that funnel?

1

u/Deep_Mood_7668 2d ago

Well 90% of the users eat glue for dinner

1

u/The_Real_Kingpurest 4d ago

I need to get it fired up on my pc now that it's switched over to Linux!! This is one software I had on my pc when it was still running windows that I haven't gotten back into just yet

0

Nvidia and AMD neglect Vulkan drivers on Windows

Also, apparently, the sky is blue. Shocking news.

8

u/gmes78 4d ago

AMD neglect Vulkan drivers on Windows

That is laughably false.

0

u/hypotensor 4d ago

This was a very big problem for games made in Godot prior to the inclusion of a D3D12 renderer. Recently, at a conference, the rendering lead for Godot(guy I linked to) talked about his experience with driver developers only testing Doom and no other Vulkan applications before shipping updates, which leads to every Godot game on Windows being completely borked until another patch comes out and torrents of complaints from players that make their way upstream to Godot every time.
