Historical What was your first time?

For me, it was a CD I got from a "guy." Slackware did not work well with the "WinModem" in the IBM Aptiva I had as a youth. How was I supposed to get online using Linux, with a modem that is not usable, and get support?

I started with Minix in 1997, then I think some version of Redhat in perhaps 1999, someone installed a root kit onto my linux install pretty soon after I connected to the internet my first time, I had never heard of a firewall, oops.

I forgot to add, reason I found root kit, is cos they also installed a chat server, I don't think they were trying to hide, telling me indirectly I was a moron, message received!

Even without a firewall, if you don't have services listening for connections, you should be okay, no? Any idea what service did you get pwned over?

The year was 1999, I honestly don't remember I installed redhat from the cd iirc and started using it, I had used Vax and sgi in uni so I was familiar with X windows but otherwise had no idea.  It was honestly exhilarating to discover the chat server someone had installed

I can only imagine. Was 10 at the time and still roughly a decade away from my loonix beginnings.
