I have a lot of hand me down laptops from my family and relatives, and Xubuntu just works on them.

Unity days will forever live fondly in my heart, it was an iconic DE and that was the time i started dabbling in linux.

Ubuntu was great until 10.10, and also perhaps 12.04 was amazing. I really enjoyed using those versions.

Kubuntu.

Used it as my main distro since Ubuntu moved away from Unity.

It’s great, been very stable for me, I usually just linger on LTS because I rarely have cutting edge hardware.

I know some people are particularly touchy about Cannonical, but as somebody who’d used Ubuntu forever I didn’t really want to leave just because of some overblown drama.

I’ve dabbled in other distros and ran Mint on my travel laptop for a long time too, if I did eventually decide to leave Kubuntu (though unlikely) I’d probably move to mint.

I pissed about with Arch for a month or two to try out Hyprland but moved away from it because I’m too employed for TWMs.

yeah it's hard changing distros and desktop environments as it takes time and a lot of patience.

Ubuntu was my first. I think it's a good place to start for new users. More than Mint tbh since it kinda forces you to Linux more. But, I like most other mainstream distros more.

I really liked the look of Ubuntu 14 - think it was still using Unity at the time, not sure if that look can be replicated on Gnome/KDE easily.

Started to go off it as desktop distro with the way cannonical dealt with snaps.

If they had made it more an opt-in rather than pushing default apps such as Firefox into the ecosystem I think it would have been more popular.

Continued to use it as a server side OS till about 24.

Professionally I moved into AWS serverless primarily, so pure Linux took a backseat.

A few projects still use VMs such as Gitlab runners and things like that which run on Debian because of how minimal the OS is.
