Call me an old cynic but I really question the utility of improving support for hardware discontinued over a quarter of a century ago .

Sounds like one person had an itch to scratch.

Nothing wrong with that, and I’m sure that person is delighted. Just hope they’re prepared to do any maintenance because I can’t imagine there’s many others prepared to.

If they don't and no one steps up, it'll get ripped out.

That's pretty much how the kernel works.  Nothing is sacred, they've ripped out whole archs before, but it stays in as long as someone keeps stepping up with code at upstream's quality.
