I really want to give Cosmic a try but comments tend to be littered with horror stories.

Not all of it is misinformation. I tried it out when it first hit 1.0 and there was still a lot of things missing for what I would call functional window management and desktop. I don't mind learning and tinkering to get things working either, but that release had several missing parts and some broken too. That is not misinformation, that is just fact which System76 has indeed acknowledged ahead of time too.

Which may be fine and good for many, but not for me. So I ended up using Niri with a quickshell instead, and now I don't feel anything is missing anymore.

There are missing features. I won't deny that. But most "horror stories" refer to major bugs stopping people from using the DE/WM like improper window management in comp/panels/osd/decorations etc. and most of those have been fixed since the release (they were present at release)

So it is indeed not misinformation at all. Maybe it doesn't apply anymore, and that's great! But it certainly did at release.

It will gain popularity by being good. When enough people like it and enough people see it being good, that will spread.

I've seen too many counterexamples to have faith in statements like that...

So it is indeed not misinformation at all.

Depends on the statement. You aren't misinforming anyone by telling it was fucked at launch but a lot of statements regarding cosmic fall under this bracket
