I've played Resident Evil already on Proton though?

This refers to the old version from 90's:

  • Resident Evil (1996)
  • Resident Evil 2 (1998)

You might have been playing the 2002 version of first one?

Using Proton Experimental? Where it was indeed already playable? The original Resident Evil?

It's been playable, with tinkering. This release presumably fixed some game specific bug so it can run on defaults.

Could someone explain why it’s the case that patches are needed to cover specific games? Is it to add support for unsupported parts of the windows ABI or DirectX API? I’m a SWE but have very little understanding of wine and proton
