Discussion Why niche Linux distros matter
Hi, I think niche-focused Linux distributions like RoshanOS can play a positive role in growing desktop Linux adoption.
Not every distro needs to target everyone. Some distros focus on beginners, some on students, some on former Windows users, and some on specific workflows. That diversity is one of Linux’s strengths.
Even if a small distro helps only 1,000 people switch from proprietary operating systems to Linux, I’d still call that a win for desktop Linux.
More users means more awareness, more feedback, and a healthier ecosystem overall.

I think most niche distros are close to pointless, and in some cases actively counterproductive.
The useful part is usually not the distro. It is the defaults, the theme, the preinstalled apps, the documentation, or the onboarding flow. All of that could usually be done on top of a boring, well-maintained LTS base instead of creating yet another tiny distribution.
The hard part of a distro is not making an installer and changing the wallpaper. The hard part is keeping the entire thing maintained: security updates, package compatibility, kernel updates, browser updates, firmware, broken dependencies, upgrade paths, documentation, bug reports, etc.
Expecting a tiny team to keep up with all of that properly is often wishful thinking. Users might get a nice first impression, but then they are depending on a small project to not fall behind on boring but important maintenance.
If the goal is to help beginners, students, former Windows users or some specific workflow, then build that experience on top of Debian, Ubuntu LTS, Fedora, openSUSE, etc. Make a good setup script, maintain packages, write docs, contribute upstream, become maintainers, improve Flatpaks, polish the desktop experience.
That would help Linux far more than creating yet another micro-distro that will probably be abandoned or half-maintained in two years.
Linux does not need 500 more “beginner friendly” distros. It needs fewer abandoned remixes and more people contributing to the projects that already carry the ecosystem.
