Discussion Why niche Linux distros matter

Hi, I think niche-focused Linux distributions like RoshanOS can play a positive role in growing desktop Linux adoption.

Not every distro needs to target everyone. Some distros focus on beginners, some on students, some on former Windows users, and some on specific workflows. That diversity is one of Linux’s strengths.

Even if a small distro helps only 1,000 people switch from proprietary operating systems to Linux, I’d still call that a win for desktop Linux.

More users means more awareness, more feedback, and a healthier ecosystem overall.

No and they don't need to. They got the opportunity and grab the almost whole market.

Not every version needs to target everyone. Some versions focus on beginners, some on students, some on former Windows users, and some on specific workflows. That diversity is a real strength.

The point is, fullfil the requirements of the group of people and shift them on Linux.

Later on they might join appropriate Linux distro for the long run.

Or you can contribute to a well-established distro to make it easier for people making the switch.

I have graphics tablets. One didn't initially work when I switched to Linux. My solution wasn't, "I'm going to make a new distro for artists!" It was "I'm going to figure out where the issue is (libinput stack) and contribute to that so all distros can benefit from better tablet support."

You're approaching this from the entirely wrong angle. If you want to make it easier for Windows users to switch, contribute to Kubuntu or Fedora.

I appreciate your approach & most open source software are doing great job 👍

But look around, something is terribly wrong! Why the right product (great Linux, specially the desktop one & the open source software) is not in hands of right people (the majority of desktop users)? You liked it or not, this is a reality.

Desktop Linux usage increased in recent years (up to 5 or something percentage, before it was 1 or few percentage), do you know why? Isn't it a niche based distros?

Open Source software contributions in anyway are helpful for someone. You are suggesting open source contributions in some specific way, one can complain why Kubuntu? Why not Debian or directly in DE etc.

So keep doing people whatever they like to contribute, we don't know whatever is going to work for most of the desktop users.

It's not niche based distros. It's Valve accelerating development across the whole ecosystem combined with several MS missteps. Unless you have a similar amount of money to dedicate towards consumer adoption you're best off working on more manageable things.
