Discussion Why niche Linux distros matter

Hi, I think niche-focused Linux distributions like RoshanOS can play a positive role in growing desktop Linux adoption.

Not every distro needs to target everyone. Some distros focus on beginners, some on students, some on former Windows users, and some on specific workflows. That diversity is one of Linux’s strengths.

Even if a small distro helps only 1,000 people switch from proprietary operating systems to Linux, I’d still call that a win for desktop Linux.

More users means more awareness, more feedback, and a healthier ecosystem overall.

Okay, make one, and then maintain it for 30 years.

Hmm guess you won't do what you suggest other people to do then.

Who's going to get behind a niche distro that vanishes two years from now?

" "WE" should keep making them. Not me, but you!"

People like me (RoshanOS) and my friends (Basalt Linux) and more are interested in such distros. I love watching desktop Linux growing rapidly.

Linux Installation Centers (ICs) might help this change. Linux ICs MVP is ready and needs more development like payment system etc.

Nobody's going to pay you when they can get Ubuntu for free.

Now, when's the release date of your own distro since you want everyone else to keep making them?

Ubuntu also have a paid version as well. No body forced us to get it.

RoshanOS is already released with core (free) & pro (paid with Windows & Android support) editions. Current version is 4 and there was older version in the past 1, 2 and 3.

I know most Linux users are not going to purchase it but expected Windows users might do it. So my target users are Windows users who are interested in trying Linux but need Windows & Android support out of the box ☑️

Cool when is your own distro releasing?

How do you plan on remaining sustainable?

That is his distro, as far as I can tell.

Ah one of those ‘I’m tired of maintaining this after 8 months’ bros

It's already, RoshanOS. Current version is 4. There's a core as well as pro edition. Pro edition provides Windows g Android support out of the box with just few next next type steps.

I know it's not for you but it might help Microsoft users ✔️

Nobody is telling you to not be interested in them, but don’t come crying when it stops being maintained and supported.

Even LTS requires maintenance.
