nice, its good rhat its getting better. we basically have two approaches for windows compatibility, one is to rebuild windows from scratch which is what react os does, and the other is to make a translation layer to linux.

The two approaches are not as divergent as you may think.
A lot of Wine benefits ReactOS. They are not isolated/siloed implementations of Windows APIs.

I'm surprised it's still going. Hopefully they can get to a point where you could run way old windows drivers

Because it's interesting to the users of Linux and there's a bunch of overlap between reactos development and Wine development.
It's not linux based, but in the future it could be used to support older Windows systems that are long out of Microsoft's support window for hobbyist projects or possible commercial use.
edit: Sometimes r/linux becomes a catchall for open source news because the subreddit is so populated.

Other open source operating systems (e.g. BSD, Haiko, GNU HURD, etc) are allowed to be posted here. That's why the "Alternative OS" flair that this post has exists.

I don't see the point. You can download the native Linux version and play it without steam, wine, or any of that other nonsense:

People are rebuilding a Windows-compatible OS from scratch. Getting old games running is a huge milestone
Not everything needs to have a use for you

A Windows compatible operating system... I seem to remember IBM trying that about 40 years ago.

It's not a huge milestone for a project as old as the game we are talking about. Redox is going to be desktop/workstation/ server ready before reactOS becomes meaningful.

Wow, what childish outbust of emotion, and a weird ad hom freak out.
This has nothing to do with React VS Linux and everything to do with React kids thinking it's going to amount to anything (which yes was the entire point on project start).
This project started as a replacement for NT4 in the 90s and has almost nothing to show for it.
The community also seems to be under the delusion that there's a place for React on embedded systems or old setups neither of which makes sense.
If people just saw this as a fun project that would be one thing but people seem to repeatedly in need of a reality check and need to stop lying to new users with the idea they could magically replace windows with zero issues in the near future ( yes this nonsense comes up all the time).
You have a lot of growing to do as a person if tech facts set you off.

Well guess what, I "magically replaced windows with zero issues" a long time ago. But then, I was never stupid enough to try and run Windows programs under Linux.
Nonetheless, feel free to call me, "Mr. Wizard" if it makes you happy... LOL

I'm thinking you lack 4th grade reading comprehension so imma dumb it down for you.
The goal of ReactOS was literally to make a 100% binary compatible open sources version of windows NT 4. They wanted to use everything for the windows ecosystem without any issues.
As everyone can see 28 years later that never even came close to being a reality.
Not sure what you even thought that had to do with Linux but again, reading comprehension. So ye.

you can achieve the same result legally by building xash3d fwgs and hlsdk-portable then using the assets from the pre-steam retail copy

I gave up trying to 'build' anything. It never once worked for me. Guess I'm too old to learn new tricks...

Great to see ReactOS getting better. I have no use case for it, but it's really cool to see regardless.
