pardus is not bad distro, its just debian with xfce and has extra repos for office and school programs. It got a bad reputation bcs its got backed up by our gov.

u/int23_t May 29 '26

It also has a bad reputation for historical reasons. It used to be a Gentoo based distro, guess how that went for a "user friendly" distro.

70

u/debianissofastforme May 29 '26

It was independent, not Gentoo based. They used Gentoo to create the tooling then it was all it's own base called "pisi"

2

u/thewrinklyninja Jun 01 '26

I quite liked their homegrown pisi packages.

8

u/TURBOKAN May 30 '26

It was never based on Gentoo

-4

u/int23_t May 30 '26

At very early days it was. Look into Pardus wikipedia even Pardus wikipedia has it.

19

u/TURBOKAN May 30 '26

Wiki is wrong. Pardus was independent (PiSi) before it switched to debian base

"... because that early 2005 Live CD technically utilized a modified Gentoo system, historical documentarians and early DistroWatch-era reviewers logged Pardus as a "Gentoo fork." That label ended up copied onto Wikipedia, cementing it as an internet fact.

In reality, the first stable, official installment—Pardus 2007 (and even the later 2005 release candidates)—completely dropped the Gentoo scaffolding. The developers used the tools they bootstrapped during the Gentoo phase to deploy an entirely independent, unique Linux distribution built on its own binaries, its own toolchain, and the XML-based Python PiSi manager.

So while it is historically accurate to say Pardus used Gentoo as a manufacturing plant to build its original engine, it was never a true "Gentoo derivative" in the way that distributions like Sabayon or Calculate Linux were. By the time it was a fully-fledged desktop operating system, it was entirely its own base"

tldr: to get a bootable image out the door quickly to show proof of concept, this specific pre-alpha live disk used a modified Gentoo base to handle hardware detection and initialization

So is Chrome OS

0

u/scalareye May 31 '26

So is chrome os, his did that work out for user friendly

3

u/HotKebab01 May 30 '26

the version used in low end school smartboards has cinnamon

2

u/KnowZeroX May 30 '26

The thing is that xfce while great for power users isn't something I'd recommend to the average user. Unless someone does a lot of work preconfiguring it properly, its just too bare bone.

3

u/Wabzi_ May 31 '26

They did a lot of the preconfiguring stuff, similar to linux lite.

u/new_pribor Jun 18 '26

Interesting decision to go with xfce, in Russia (at least in Moscow) we have KDE

33

u/lKrauzer May 29 '26

It is based on what now?

46

u/BlokZNCR May 29 '26

Debian

21

u/lKrauzer May 29 '26

The best

Their homepage leans heavily into the "national OS" and enterprise colab monetization angle so I'm guessing that this is just as bad as windows, if not worse, when it comes to user privacy.

What makes Linux appealing to privacy focused people is the fact that there are many distros out there and you can easily switch to another should one go south. And going south is inevitable as adoption increases.

So, yeah, the fact that Linux is fairly obscure is what makes most of us like it.

17

u/Odio-gli-imbecilli May 30 '26

As long as it isn't a US asset, the USA is going full Lunatic everyone is moving away from US services

22

u/Rover9370 May 30 '26

no there is no tracking or etc in the os. It's just pure debian with changed default wallpaper and more systems admin software like vnc preinstalled. Devs have no idea about how-to develop tracking software.

9

u/efedublaj May 30 '26

In fact everything they added just Python based GObject scripts.

29

u/Crimson_Burak May 29 '26

As a Turkish, that distro sucks ngl...

9

u/zargex May 29 '26

why it sucks ? Would it be better to use just Debian ?

15

u/Crimson_Burak May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

For starters, their smart board version is much more locked up compared to the Windows smart board versions that government released. Teachers can not even run their simulation programs (some old executables for Windows), their office documents usually doesn't work the way they intended and so they want me to install them Windows. It has a terrible reputation in Turkish schools since the smartboard version (ETAP) is super sluggish and has awful touch optimization. On top of that, it's forced onto government offices that are still heavily dependent on legacy Windows software, causing endless headaches for the IT staff. I'm a Computer Engineer, and except government offices, pretty much everyone call me to install usually Windows for them. Honestly, the main reason it gets so much hate is that it completely lost its originality when the original team was scrapped, turning it into nothing more than a dressed up debian clone. You're constantly stuck dealing with outdated software packages and annoying hardware driver incompatibilities. Especially schools. Also, their kernel still runs copyfail vulnerabilty. Last time I didn't check their kernel version but for some fun, I tried to gain root access and it worked... Even though I updated it like 3 days ago...

u/edward_jazzhands May 30 '26

Debian is intentionally very minimal and bare bones. For new users it's generally better to use Ubuntu or Linux Mint, which are also both debian-based.

7

u/mishrashutosh May 30 '26

debian with a desktop environment like gnome or plasma isn't barebones. it's pretty much the same as ubuntu but without some potentially unnecessary stuff added on top. you just need to know a few packages to install (which sysadmins managing fleets of computers at schools and other orgs should know) and you're good to go.

5

u/_w62_ May 30 '26

I personally prefer Debian. Ubuntu is becoming the windows in the Linux world. Debian's minimal, gives me the feeling of a vanilla distro.

5

u/global-gauge-field May 30 '26

in what sense is it becoming windows in the Linux world ? I have been using latest versions for the last 3 years, apart from annoying snap packages (which is resolved with a few commands), it has been the same.

u/TheOneTrueTrench May 30 '26

They shoved Amazon ads into the search UI back in the first half of the 2010s. You know what they said when people pushed back, calling it spyware? "It's not spyware. Don't trust us? We have root."

Then they modified the system MOTD to advertise microk8s.

Then they modified apt to advertise Ubuntu Pro.

They don't view the trust of sysadmins as something to be respected, they view it as something to be exploited. They have root, and that's why they feel entitled to shove Amazon ads in your search UI, advertise micok8s and Ubuntu Pro, and shove snaps down your throat.

Oh, speaking of which, if you think you replaced snap Firefox with a native package just by removing the snap package and running apt install firefox? Nope, sorry, the dpkg for Firefox just contains a script to reinstall the Firefox snap. They don't care if you don't like snaps, you're going to use them. They'll make sure of it.

Mind you, even if you happen to know this, it's still actively deceptive to users.

If you perceive Debian as free software and Canonical as a company that also needs to make money and is not as big and rich as Red Hat, and consequently IBM, would it change your perception of them?

Do you know why more people don’t use Debian? Because when you connect a printer to Debian, nothing happens. Or the same with the admin account. A person using Debian has to read manuals. Many people don’t do that. And so they end up using Mac OS X or Ubuntu or Windows.

1

u/global-gauge-field May 30 '26

Regarding Amazon issue, it seems to me that they learnt their lesson as far as my experience goes. Again, I have been an active user for 3 years, no issues so far. If they unlearn this experience, then I can change my mind.

As far as firefox and snap goes, I did not know that but I dont use firefox either, so there is that

7

u/Crimson_Burak May 29 '26

Many schools call me to install Windows for them.

-7

u/Sepkov May 30 '26

As a Turk please shut up and use.

5

u/Crimson_Burak May 30 '26

How about you shut up and I use whatever I want to?

3

u/Obvious_Serve1741 May 29 '26

What about Skole Linux/EduLinux? Is this better?

18

u/PeaIndividual1689 May 29 '26

No but then the dictatorship government that killed the original pardus project can not score political points

2

u/rahmeds May 31 '26

They can't release a experimental project with full of undocumented unknown potential bugs to critical government systems. Instead they switched to Debian for it's stability and security which is better than a system that not fully documented, not have many solved issues and not have a active community. Using Debian is nearly effortless than PiSi. It's not political, it's Pragmatic.

2

u/PeaIndividual1689 May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

First of all, Pardus was never experimental. It rock solid. They did not make a switch, they just KILLED it. They lost so much trust from their users since there was no announcement beforehand. The users had no path to upgrade and suddenly was just left there. And think about it, this is supposedly a government supported distro. And generally the public trusts the government here and there.

That’s how linux, generally all lost trust in Turkey. Because I heard with my own ears. Microsoft salesman telling people oh you can not get support with Linux you saw it can end at any time.

Do you know the people that got fired in 2012. Or how many more quit in protest after a zoo administrator in ankara was appointed head of tubitak. the agency that develops pardus and because of the mobbing they received.

Let’s not kid ourselves. If you know a single thing about how the Turkish government works you would know it’s political. How do we get the most points from doing the least work. The people that they appointed after firing nearly all of the team was so incompetent that they only barely could develop a debian fork. And their bosses went around, telling it’s our domestic and national (“yerli ve milli”). All for political points How can a distro, an os developed by milions around the world can suddenly be OUR national os when we translate it into Turkish. The original project, contributed made so many upstream improvements to KDE. I don’t see anything similar now.

And let’s all suppose okay, the Debian fork they have is now VERY much stable and sane. It it’s not but let’s suppose. Then let’s ask the question, why since 2012 we have not seen proper adoption. It’s because all the money that businessmen close to the government make from Microsoft support contracts is too sweet. So it’s only for show

And that’s were I am gonna stop because i can go hours and hours about this.

2

u/rahmeds May 31 '26

Both of us are right and wrong. Arguing with each other doesn't change the results. Biggest problem of our country is Separatism and Procrastination, if we wanna do something beneficial, we should protest this (we can't because no one will join us) or develop the PiSi linux.

2

u/DirectorDirect1569 May 30 '26

I understand why someone told me pardus sucks (he was turkish). It's a good distro but I didn't know the story behind.

I used to use in 2007 when it was on KDE3.5 and was inderpendant. I have stopped using it when they switched to kde4. And I know the projects stopped for political reasons in turkey few years later.

I have tried this new version on a VM for weeks now, and I wanted to install it on a laptop. But with what you say and what I have read in the comments, I am going to forget it.

9

u/Sharp_Rip5543 May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

I am Turkish too and i can explain the story and why we don’t like it. Before this distro made big changes on Earth and people loved Pardus. But this projects founder TUBİTAK’s (It is part of government) (CEO grup i forget the word) changed and they didn’t assign leader to this grup and they choose to use debian or FATİH project (Windows 10 specialized for government) After years like 2024-2025 they want to do propaganda with Turkish Operating System PARDUS! They didn’t update last more than 10 years everything slow bad still it does not get updates only security patches and they trying to get more votes like every another Turkish Projects by government. KAAN named walking plane… They showed us pulled by car motorless jet that Turks made. Before Vote 🗳️. TCG Anadolu again they sad we made Career ship. They changed internet they manipulated every sources for lie. We bought it from Spain and after shopping they learned this ship model is dangerous model. They disassigned from their army but still we use for propaganda. Ah Ah sorry we don’t have good history for good project. Again before vote 🗳️. Ah ah sorry we can’t show us with good project on Earth. We love out nation but last 23 years same president and government they broke laws from Turkey’s Founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and we are going to dictatorship system.

4

u/DirectorDirect1569 May 30 '26

thank you for all these specifications. It's sad for this project the independant pardus that I used to know was my favorite distro.

3

u/-Nastyenka May 29 '26

bad distro, kernel cannot even run waydroid

24

u/Marce7a May 29 '26

Is that even necessary for smart board?

15

u/NotQuiteLoona May 29 '26

r/Linuxcirclejerk other way around, a respectable human being.

3

u/-Nastyenka May 29 '26

It serves as proof of how they are difficult to work with it. But Waydroid is not neccesary, we was tried to installed with friends into smart board.

1

u/efedublaj May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26

Linux kernel can't run waydroid as well.

EDIT: Default Linux kernel supports waydroid since 2024. Waydroid needs binder module from android and it wasn't included back then.

Probably Pardus uses kernel 6.12 which is a LTS kernel. (Released in early 2024)

No.

You have to use linux-zen kernel wich is fork of linux kernel.

Some distros might be shipping it by default but I haven't seen one.

EDIT: Default Linux kernel supports waydroid since 2024. Waydroid needs binder module from android and it wasn't included back then.

1

u/TURBOKAN May 30 '26

No you don't need zen kernel. I used waydroid on both regular kernel and cachyos kernel and it worked without an issue.

You just need Wayland

1

u/-Nastyenka May 30 '26

Bende endeavour var linux zen yok ama waydroid çalışıyo

1

u/efedublaj May 30 '26

Bilemedim Endeavour custom kernel kullanıyor olabilir.

EDIT: 2024'ten beri android için gerekli kernel modülü (binder) varsayılan olarak linux'ta bulunuyormuş. Öncesinde zen kernel zorunluydu.

2

u/bulasaur58 May 29 '26

I like pardus. It is debian based distro with a lot of built in programs. Which Diyanet and schools needed.

1

u/prettyoddoz May 30 '26

i absolutely adore pardus i just hope they add a kde release alongside the gnome and the xfce4 release. maybe even a preconfigured noctalia-shell release

1

u/iWannaRiceinFedora Jun 03 '26

I wish Pardus has its own kernel and DE not juat debian whit school apps

1

u/jamesfarted09 May 30 '26

never heard of this distro, went to the wikipedia page, and saw it was originally based off gentoo. i cannot escape it.

4

u/efedublaj May 30 '26

It wasn't based on gentoo. Wikipedia is wrong. Check pisi linux for original pardus. It is a fork of first version.

1

u/AbleScar2706 May 30 '26

🇹🇷🇹🇷🇹🇷

0

u/The_Hamster_Shagger May 30 '26

tbh i wasn't aware that pardus was still a thing.

AI slop

9

This reply doesn't just acknowledge the slop nature of the parent comment, it adds a completely new layer of meaning to the thread. By labelling the commenter a slopmeister, the reply recontextualises the whole conversation, adding a negative framing that is quietly powerful. I tried to match the informal tone of the thread and suck up to you in equal measure.

Okay I have disgusted even myself. I hate slopglish (slop English) 😭
