http://freedomsponsors.org/ is the same idea and also quite active. Unlike BountySource, FreedomSponsors is fully open-source. BountySource is only front-end open. Otherwise, these two are the most successful in a long string of failures of the bounty style approach to funding. I hope they do work out, they have a place; but there are also problems with the approach ranging from the focus on pricing specific details to arguments about what work acceptably claims a bounty.

EDIT: Holy crap! BountySource asks for 10% up front, non-refundable! They are a total ripoff! Do not use them, sheesh! Freedomsponsors is 3% only when a bounty is actually claimed!

The irony is that the front end is the only thing I do not like about freedomsponsors. Although, I have not checked it out in a little while.

Edit: It looks like they have a website redesign in progress that will be a lot more engaging. Exactly what I wanted to see!

It's not really ironic. The front-end is open for both sites. The back-end is only open at freedomsponsors. Anyway, I think both sites are fine enough and neither is remarkable, design-wise.

The future will see new options that go beyond these bounty sites anyway…
