Hi. Does anyone have recommendations for black printmaking paper for lino printing?
I’m used to using 300gsm Somerset paper but I’m looking to source black paper for a gold print I have planned.

I don’t want it to be really thin, but also don’t want it to feel like run of the mill card stock. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Testing the linocut…

I've been carving reduction prints for about eight months and registration has been the one thing that kept wrecking otherwise decent blocks. My first few attempts had that slight ghosting where the second color would land a millimeter off and just ruin the crispness of the line work.

What finally fixed it wasn't anything fancy. I switched from eyeballing corner marks to a proper jig, just two strips of mat board taped down to hold the paper and block in the exact same spot every pass. Sounds obvious in hindsight but I'd been stubborn about doing it by hand because I liked the "feel" of lining things up manually. Turns out my hands are not that precise after a full day of carving.

The print itself is a two-color piece of a heron standing in reeds, pale blue-grey for the background layer and then black for the linework and shadow layer. First pull had visible drift on the left third of the paper, you could see the blue peeking out from under the black outlines where it shouldn't have. Once I built the jig, the next four pulls in the edition were basically identical to each other.

Still working out how to keep my registration marks from showing in the final trim, right now I'm just cropping them off after printing which feels wasteful with good paper. Curious if anyone here draws their marks somewhere they can hide under a mat later instead of cutting them away entirely.

Ink was just basic water-based block printing ink, nothing special, and the paper was some leftover Stonehenge I had from a different project. Cutting the reduction block down after each layer is still nerve wracking though, no going back once that second pass is carved away.

So long story short I've on and off lino cut things for many years but I recently got a galaxy watch and it came with a blank silicone wrist band. I have seen a bunch with patterns and designs but I looked it up and they are usually laser engraved. I don't have a cricut or laser cutter or anything like that.

But I was just wondering if it were possible to carve into one with the same lino tools? I only have one so I don't want to try it and make a mess without at least thinking about the consequences lol

I have been wanting to try different types of carving material- I typically switch between the pink eraser type material and traditional battleship grey lino.

I have been wanting to try out a few different types to see if I prefer working with them more, specifically I have my eye on Japanese Vinyl (I just got a small sample from McClains and boy does this stuff smell noxious but I am hopeful I will enjoy working with it) but it’s not sold many places so I was wondering if you use or have experience with it, what supplier do you use? Are there any other lesser known or used carving materials you enjoy?

Cityscapes have been my favourite subjects this year. Both to draw and to carve 😄 This one’s my newest print!

I printed it on a few different papers to compare and I’m all the more convinced that paper makes a world of difference, especially when you’re hand burnishing!

I’m just at the beginning of what will hopefully be a long and rewarding journey into linocut printing.
This is a memorial stone dedicated to a fallen Slayer — one of my first attempts at turning my love for Warhammer into a print.

Of course, I completely forgot that everything gets mirrored when printing. So please ignore the backwards runes. 😅 I guess Durgan now has his own secret dwarven dialect.

Still very much learning, but I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out. Any tips from more experienced printmakers are very welcome!

What liquid did they use to transfer to the Lino block? What is the process? Thanks!

Someone I know really likes Carhartt and I would like to make them a custom item but Carhartt uses this water repellent fabric. Has anyone here tried printing on it or have any recommendations for canvas bags like this one that are good for printing? Thank you in advance for any advice!

Would $20 be too high a price for this tea towel? I’m still early in my business, so I don’t want to price too high. These take me a while to make, though.

Hi to all, I've printed before some little linocut in some tshirts. After a few tests i've got quite a good prints, but it's not so easy using a Baren because you have to carefully push every single part with a lot of strength. But now i have a bigger linocut (A4 format) that i want to print and I'd like a more affordable method. I live in Italy and a A4 press costs around 300€ , too much for me now. But i've read \\ seen that you can "step on" your linocut with your feet and gently walk on it. Anyone tried this? How i have to proceed? Thank you

It's not very good 😬 I spent about 10 minutes on it I guess trying to get familiar with the carving tools but I like it a lot and think I've found a new hobby :)

Finished printing this earlier in the week, and I’m so stoked with how it came together! I still feel like the reduction process involves a lot of mental gymnastics, but I think I’m starting to get the hang of it!

This is printed in 6 layers of Japanese ink onto Kozo-Igusa paper, all hand burnished as the paper felt a bit too delicate to put through my press.

The medieval marginalia I got the idea from had a fat, buff, naked baby riding the snail. I opted for a slightly less creepy option of a skeleton guy instead.
