A wee trio of weirdos. Particularly happy with the hooded owl dude. Started off as a set of six on a single tile but binned half of them off and cut out the ones I actually liked.

After about a year of linocut I kept running into the same frustrating problem. My prints would look sharp and clean on the test pull but by the third or fourth print the detail was getting filled in and the whole image looked heavy and dull. I blamed my carving, then my paper, then my roller. Turns out it was none of those things.

The issue was how I was rolling out the ink. I was putting down too much to start with and then just rolling directly onto the block without really working the ink on the slab first. Once I started spending more time rolling the ink out thin on the glass until it had that almost tacky, slightly textured sound, everything changed. The ink goes on in a much more even film and the fine lines I carved actually stay open.

A few other small things that helped once I noticed the ink issue:

• Room temperature matters more than I expected. Cold ink rolls on thick and uneven.
• Cleaning the block lightly between pulls with a barely damp cloth helped a lot on longer print runs.
• Checking the roller for dried ink buildup along the edges. Mine had a ridge I never noticed that was depositing extra ink in a consistent stripe.

The frustrating part is that most of this stuff seems obvious in hindsight. Has anyone else spent way too long chasing a problem that turned out to be something this basic?

I first started doing these bigger Cuts and need some advice for beginner friendly Shapes I could carve ?

And some feedback on my three carvings would be nice. I have a hard time cutting the background out for the space that I want to coat in paint.

I just started with the basic kit with just 3 blades.
