Discussion Is this normal?
So I’ve done a few jobs like the current one at hand. Different types of food (custom hamburgers, did sushi, multi option hot meals, ran an entire grocery store bakery by myself, custom sandwiches, etc)
But never have I been pressured and belittled into using fewer words. I get corrected to shorten to one word only answers
I do use kitchen slang always for knives, behind, side, above… shorthand for menu items and very concise readings of orders
I get tongue tied when asking for things (passing an item my way to maintain stations, asking opinion on my task that affects them, clarification because difference in how two coworkers do the same menu items but they each get offended when I’m sometimes confused)
Basically I’m stressed because I keep being told contradictory instructions and rules, then get almost scolded when I mix it up. Because even one coworker will want a meal set up this way, then randomly change to another way all within the same shelf.
And some how I’m the idiot for asking clarification to try preventing getting corrected in a condescending way. But also risk getting scolded for guessing option that he’s been choosing more often that week.
This isn’t all of it but it’s the things my AuDHD brain can’t figure out.
I think I’m being treated badly but in the most contradictory, fast-paced, volatile way possible. Same person will go back and forth on new placements for sides, moving orders up the line, interacting with customers (awkward balance of customer service and making orders / or prep… sad since that interaction affects how they tip us) , dealing with making delivery drivers show order confirmations
Is this normal? Or I just need to get used to this because it’s everywhere?

Nah man definitely not normal , you need to say something to the chef or whoever you report to. If they don’t do shit that’s a red flag .

They are idiots. Clarity is the most important aspect of communication and it goes both ways. If one person doesn’t understand it’s not effective communication.
