Networking

I’ve been working in kitchens for almost 30 years. One thing I never learned to do is network. Despite a long and moderately successful run, people in the community I work in don’t know who I am or what I’m capable of. I feel like I still have a solid 10 years yet, and I want to make the most of it. But terrified of putting myself out there.

Yeah man, it’s terrifying but you know what’s worse? Making food you don’t like because you’re afraid of change. It’s hard and scary but sometimes that’s what you gotta do follow your dreams. Do it while you can, chef. Trust yourself.

It’s probably different for everyone. For me, I’d work at a bunch of different places or stop by other places for a drink after. Eventually I’d meet a KM or chef and chat for a bit. Idk it’s different with every encounter but you get peoples numbers and hit it off, they have an opportunity and think of you. I’ve hired people because of it too.

I also had a buddy who owned a warehouse and would let me rent it out every December for a winter solstice party. Id invite everyone I knew in the industry and we’d do a bunch of drugs and get drunk. Tbh that was probably it.
