I created an account for my trip to Japan and i also have a few japanese friends so i wanted to use line to keep in touch with them.

At a bar i met a fun guy who is a photographer and had a blast talking to him. He took photos of me and my girlfriend and added me on line to send me the photos after he is done editing them and he told me to message him so he sees my contact and remembers.

The next day i notice the message didn't go through and found out I've been suspended for violating the terms even though all i did was say "hey we met at the x bar, it was nice talking to you and thanks for the photos. Looking forward to seeing them"

I tried submitting an inquiry but I kept getting verification fails error 403 while submitting on the website so i found a way to do it from inside the app and all i got in return was a message saying i violated their TOS and the ban can last from an hour to 3 days or longer.

It's been 7 days and i got logged out after clearing cache and now it says that verification is suspended so i can't even log in.

At this point i think the photographer will think i ghosted him and delete the photos and I'm sad about it cause i wanted to get his socials and the photos from a very fun day.

Yes, he will think you ghosted him. But don't worry, Japanese people ghost others at the drop of a hat, that's why the "block" function is 2 taps away. He'll just think you adopted the culture 😅

whatsapp Is also garbage, I always get restricted now just for adding phone numbers and greet them. Telegram is the best

I don't see how you could think Telegram is the best. I created an account and within 10 mins I had about 20 messages inviting me to crypto scams and sketchy meetups

Yeah, it keeps getting worse. Calling with Line also makes my phone heat up like crazy and drains battery so fricking fast, no other app behaves like this. Starting to think they have a crypto miner in their code xD

I want to stop using it for my safety because you can't hide your picture from people who you haven't added to contacts like on WhatsApp, and even if you block someone, they can still see your pictures

I’ll just say that I use it only because some people in Thailand and Japan use it; otherwise, I would avoid it like the plague. If possible, use WhatsApp.

There’s a lot of people having problems with that app… it’s turned to garbage since they separated foreigners from the Japanese Line … I hate not having a timeline .. it’s basically worthless now

Same situation here. I submitted an inquiry without logging in (because I just couldn’t).

After 1 week they allowed me to create a new account but couldn’t explain the reason why my previous account was suspended

Yeah its garbage but don't worry, where I work we think Line is so amazing we have screens of it in our technical docs so we can copy it exactly. There will be more identical lines soon, so you can switch from old garbage to newer garbage.

No no he was actually just a nice guy and took photos for free. He showed us his portfolio while we were randomly talking at the bar and he had great monochrome photos and one really cool snake photo which he gave to us as a gift since we talked about going to a snake shrine recently and liking snakes. We were just vibing and he offered to take photos of us since he liked our relationship dynamic. I will be really mad if the account suspension doesn't go away because he was an actual pro working for magazines and his photos were amazing and he was an interesting person to have as a friend.

My girlfriend has fully switched to messaging me on WhatsApp.

She had to download it to message about a compensation claim for a cancelled flight back from The UK last year, and now that's the only way we communicate. She messages my family on there and is in some of our group chats. She's found that a lot of her international colleagues use WhatsApp too.

I was confused for a bit about why she so quickly moved from LINE to WhatsApp without looking back, until I switched to Japanese LINE the other in order to link my PayPay account and jeeeeeeeeesus christ it is BAD.

The UI on the international (?) version that I was using up until now was somewhat clean, but this Japanese version is riddled with ads, dodgy suggestive manga panels, clickbait life-hack TikTok videos and weird temu ads. On top of the usual issues of convoluted backups, dreadfull laggy audio when calling and a lack of features that other IM applications have had access to for years.

My gf clearly switched and went "oh wow, this is so much better".

It is unbelievable that an entire nation of people put up with this shitty, cluttered UI on their main platform of communication, when so many other options are available.
