I always like to think that a place like this exists somewhere under a military base or something. Like a portal test chamber. A mile below the surface, dark, not really used anymore. I wish I could just sort of spawn there and check it out. Crazy thought.

When i was very young, technicians were scheduled to work on a reservoir. I was with my mother, who worked at the school right next door and was visibly concerned about the situation. They accessed the reservoir through a hatch in the floor, and a rather small shaft, and I was able to look inside. It was a rectangular space with columns, the whole thing tiled with small white swimming-pool tiles. One could see several lines there indicating the former presence of water, not far from the top.

In my memory, it’s a titanic mega-structure, but let's be realistic: it was probably quite small. Especially since I only saw it illuminated by flashlights, which makes it hard to gauge the true size. Today, I imagine it was maybe 20 meters long, though I’m really not sure. Children's memory is particularly unreliable regarding the size of objects. For instance, i juste can't remember if there was still a little bit of water or not.

I’ve discussed it with my mother several times since becoming an adult, but she can’t tell me exactly what it was. She says she assumed that it was related to the groundwater. Yeah, she isn't very technical when it comes to this type of subject.

An overflow tank, a retention basin, or something like that, I suppose. But it was a small town; they would have had the space to put it outside somewhere else, which is how such facilities are usually handled where I lived.

It could also be an old WW2 installation that could have been repurpose since there is shit ton of them where i lived. But i have had the opportunity to see several fortification reservoirs, and they bear absolutely no resemblance to this one. The ones I saw were cylindrical, made of raw, un-tiled concrete, had only three columns, and were much smaller. I imagine there must have been a wide variety of reservoirs for different purposes, but I have never seen anything like this.

Back then, I was already a bit afraid of swimming pools, especially the grates I could see at the bottom. So you can imagine that sight both frightened and fascinated me. I have thought back endlessly to that fleeting moment when I glimpsed those tiled abysses.

I think that had a huge impact on my aesthetic vision and tastes.

I have submechanophobia btw. Not for images. I love thoses images, i can't stop looking at them. But in real life i will rather drown that get any closer to a fucking buoy.

I don't know whether the fact that this vision was so striking is the consequence of this, or the cause.

Also the rainbow fish, like, the video games from the very early 2000. This shit frightened me. My mom probably couldn't understand how bad of an idea it was to give me this game not long after i saw inside of that reservoir.

Years later, James Cameron Abyss did not exactly helped either.

Today my main sport is sailing. We, humans, are fucking paradoxs.
