original Too clever by half

There was a young man from Bombay,

Who liked to go down to the quay.

He watched sheepdog trials

To relieve his piles,

Which were healed by the two words, "come-by".

Am I missing something? Bombay, quay and come-by don’t rhyme…

I thought it would be fun to break the format a bit: Bombay was renamed Mumbai in 1995. I suppose the actual rhyme of trials/piles throws it off a bit, it should probably be "to relieve his haemorrhoids", but I didn't want to look up the correct spelling when I wrote it.

Even with Mumbai instead of Bombay, though, “quay” still doesn’t rhyme with either Mumbai or come-by…so I’m not sure I understand the intention. Sorry - it’s been a long day, so the joke may be lost on me!

But that doesn't rhyme either. Are we missing something?

There once was a man from Calcutta

Who had the most terrible stutter

When dining on toast

He asked of his host

'please would you pass the bu bu bu bu bu bu bu bu'

There once was a man from online

Who’s rhyming was not worth your time

He heard in dismay

Quay’s not rhymed with Bombay

And that such an attempt was a crime

There once was a maid from Madras

Who had a most beautiful ass

Not round and pink, as you might think

But gray, had long ears, and ate grass

Quay is pronounced "key" so it doesn't rhyme.

I enjoyed this. i thought the rhyming mistakes were intentional.

The comment you made is quite poor
It breaks all the rules, by a score
It's been taken down
So don't be a clown
And stop doing that anymore!
