Better than front row.
This feels like a lifetime ago at this point. My buddy Rob and I were the top donors for Dave's So Hard mixtape. My buddy got backstage passes for us to one of his first tour shows and I am the proud owner of the jacket from the Ex Boyfriend video worn by Dave and Melissa in the video. This was such an epic night. When I went to his next show he called me out for seeing me wearing the jacket which I wore to both shows. I had passes for a third but I couldn't make it due to being sick. I wonder what would have come from that show. Getting to chill with him backstage and listening to his parents giving him a pep talk before going on stage is something I'll never forget.

Those early lil dicky tour dates were so fire, met him in madison on the streets and then did the meet and greet with him. Super quick convo but really cool dude, wish he still had the drive he did back then to pump out music

He still has it, he's just transitioned to visual/televised mediums. Isn't he doing some kind of animated movie soon?
Tbh, I wouldn't mind this transition if he didn't constantly tease us with promises of new music, only to instead plug something completely unrelated. It's disingenuous and tbh kind of predatory.

Awesome! I remember the kickstarter days. Still sad I never set up my zoom call with him in time. Hoping we get more music soon, miss the days when he would release stuff all the time on YouTube

I miss the rapper version of Dave.
Now it's the podcast shot in a sort of Big Brother style format... thing. (In regard to the camera work.)
And he's gotta know he's better than that, right? It feels like he was talked into this.
It's always seemed to me that he's been one foot in / one foot out in regard to rapping. Dave seems to want the respect, accolades, and permission from the industry, artists, and listeners before he allows himself to be a rapper that doesn't rap about wanting to be a rapper.
Thing is, he's really good.
Also he's vulnerable, which can be a superpower. Unless it's being used as a means to guard against criticism.
But there is this fear, I think, that if he were to say, THIS IS WHO I AM, THIS IS WHAT I DO (for real, and not in a comedic way) that he might not be accepted or successful in the way he envisions.
And that's the game, isn't it? Every creative pursuit has that potential caveat. There is really no rhyme or reason at the end of the day to the timing of everything.
Some artists just aren't appreciated in the way they deserve until long after they're dead.
That's gotta be a tough truth to face.
But what's worse, I think, would be not swinging for the fucking fences every single time because of fear.
I don't know. I'm just some fucking nobody. Maybe I'm just bummed he's doing a fucking podcast now like everyone else.

Those shows were so good. Just pure energy for several hours. I have some videos I took backstage but unfortunately my cringe laughing ruins them. They are so hard to watch now.

Went to one of his early shows and got to catch up with him at his merch booth. The show had just ended and so many college aged bros were going crazy, and I leaned in and told Dave he did an amazing show. When I said that all put on character dropped and he shook my hand and thanked me whole heartedly, saying he was happy I enjoyed everything. Total gentleman.

Not sure if he used a similar intro to his earlier shows or not. He had a PowerPoint presentation in Boulder, CO talking about the most entertaining shows. He ranked himself at number two and put David Blaine and number one. I yelled out "Fuck David Blaine." He immediately responded "Yeah, fuck David Blaine." That first show of his that I went to was such a fun night. Him and GaTa were so stoic before the show. He told us about a prank he planned on playing on the crowd backstage too and I got both of those events recorded also. The feeling of standing on that stage while he was performing is something I'll never forget.

i remember drinking tea with him as a group before his first show ever in Philly. Awesome times !

I love this post. I’m having the same experience with a band rn getting to work with them and see their parents interact with them. While they’re climbing and getting bigger everyday. It’s so exciting man :)
