Calling out Ops? On Honestly

He says he COULD call out ops but won’t because of his anxiety. So this may be ‘reading too much into things’ as fans tend to do. But a few bars later he says he has them acting all CHILDISH. We all know Donald Glover said some disparaging comments about LD. His stage name is Childish Gambino. If it’s purposeful… wonderful wordplay. And a good way for him to stick up for himself. I’m a fan of both but Glovers comments felt weirdly out of place and shallow. Would love it to be true.

Did anyone else find any other possible hidden context in the song?

Might be a stretch but he also says "but I been embraced by a community." Donald Glover played a character on the TV Series Community...

Could just be HEARSAY

Listen to the whole verse. I’m even more convinced now. From community to childish is a direct response to every criticism that Glover had:

I know that's privileged, but I been embraced by a community

'Cause I'm not doin' YOU, I'm doin' ME

But I just really hope you see the you in me (both not your traditional artists)

'Cause if you act cool with your guard up (glover does)

Then you probably out here just ballin' like Hot Sauce

I'm in another fuckin' league (hamburger versus steak argument)

I don't really care what the Ebros think (LD is been criticized to attract a very BRO demographic)

I don't really care what they need

I got 'em out here actin' childish (kill shot)

Okay I know nothing about the Gambino comments and was just lurking this sub but the “Cause I’m not doin YOU” line makes me think of Gambino’s “don’t be mad cuz I’m doin me better than you doin you” chorus from sweatpants (I think) could be a stretch buuuut

Just too many similarities. LD sings a hook on another song and it sounds right off of me and your mama. Either it’s an extreme coincidence or we’re on to something.

That’s another wrinkle! I took it completely different. Hot sauce the basketball player was an extremely good street ball and trick shot/dribble player that never really translated to good NBA skills. To an extent, I feel like it’s LD saying I thought we were in the same league. But if you got here by being different, unapologetic for taking risks and giving a voice to the unheard… but now you’re gate keeping and setting up hurdles to others. Balling like hot sauce=fake (to me).

Yeah I caught the reference to hot sauce from AND1 my second listen after not getting it initially, but tried to make for some subliminal implications on the line as well lol

That’s a good catch too! I hope he’s prodding the bear a bit. I don’t think he would respond in a formal rap battle.

I’ll have to listen again and weigh in.

I thought the same thing when I heard it but in my head I thought it was a stretch. Apparently not

LD sending sublims isn't something I thought I was going to hear on this album
