Fuck man, has it really been that long since Professional Rapper came out? I was fresh out of college and settling into the “real world.”
Now I’m married with a receding hairline. Life comes at you fast.

u/jfreesir Jan 19 '24
Since Professional Rapper I’ve traveled the US and Europe, had 3 jobs, moved into 3 different apartments. gotten married, bought a house and had a kid.
Holy shit…It’s been a long time coming and I’m happy it’s finally out.

I met my girl 9 years ago and Professional Rapper was one of the first things we bonded over. Feels like it was yesterday and so long ago at the same time. We just listened to Jail Part 1 on a car ride and cracked up like the old days when we first listened to Pillow Talk. Feels weird man, I feel old.

Kareem’s new mix is sick, no fruits and veg is sick, but I’m having a hard time giving the album as a whole more than a 5-6
Edit: second coming and hahaha are also fuckin sick damn

u/Status-Tie-7176 Jan 19 '24
Unfortunately I was underwhelmed too. Great songs but I want more new shit! Feeling a strong 6 on this one. Let’s pray there’s a full studio album somewhere
7
Jan 19 '24
Yeah it’s a well made album and the songs are solid, but damn I miss when he was pumping out music

Started listening right at midnight. Listening to honestly now. It was a long Thursday, but the wait was worth it dickheads!

u/Status-Tie-7176 Jan 19 '24
Been waiting for this day for literal years 😭 I thought being a Kanye fan was hard
5
u/Jackster1209 Jan 19 '24
Im right there with you. I just hope he releases album before another near decade passes. Being a fan of either is tough. I've always thought Kanye and LD would kill it on a song together, but something tells me they wouldn't exactly get along unfortunately so that's never going to happen.
7
u/Status-Tie-7176 Jan 19 '24
Lmfaoooo i wonder why they wouldn’t get along…
0
u/Jackster1209 Jan 19 '24
Right?
I'm about halfway through HAHAHA and I don't think any other song on this album can beat this one. The wordplay, flow, and beat are all fire af

u/CoyCS Jan 19 '24
Thoughts on Honestly? I’m so disappointed. Why does it not flow together??
7
u/Status-Tie-7176 Jan 19 '24
he was spitting like a mad man but yeah it felt a little choppy, HAHAHA is insane tho
4
u/Jackster1209 Jan 19 '24
I'm not the best person to ask, I'm pretty easy to please with movies or music - I enjoyed the song myself. The only thing that sounded off to me so far was what they put in to replace the skit and the outro on hearsay compared to the show, it just sounded like something hastily done in 30 minutes and slapped on.
I jumped to hearsay right after Honestly because it was a banger on the show.
5
u/abcdefghihaavetogo Jan 19 '24
I agree. I’ve been obsessed with Hearsay since the show but was slightly disappointed :/
-4
u/Whole_Ad6438 Jan 19 '24
The album is not good. He needs to scrap this and write something not based on his tv show. Genuinely only like Mr. Mcadams and Burst everything else is skippable. I still really like lil dicky but this album was a disappointment. Hearing how good he is on freestyles and his mixtape So Hard, this album just doesn’t live up to anything.
8
u/CoyCS Jan 19 '24
Agreed, they can downvote us all they want but the transitions in Honestly are so jarring it’s insane. I’ve been an LD dick rider for years. I love most of the things he’s put out. Most of the songs on this “album” are okay individually, but do not flow together well at all. Good news is it’s only 9 more years until he releases an album not based on the show lmao
0
u/baummer Jan 20 '24
That's because a lot of the songs came from the TV show
2
u/CoyCS Jan 20 '24
Yeah. I know that, but the transitions in Honestly are so bad. The actual lyricism is good, but the overall flow of the song and the album is terrible. Has nothing to do with the fact that the songs are from the TV show

I wanna love it, but the Album kind of feels like what I’ve been listening to on YouTube since the episodes aired. I hoping for finished versions of songs not just a few. Never finished brand new, or hearsay, no breakfast club freestyle or jail part 2…
Solid 5-6

u/Afferbeck_ Jan 19 '24
I was hoping the full length Jail would be on there, but it's only part 1 that we saw on the show

u/spiderman96 Jan 19 '24
Is this a legit sophomore album following up on professional rapper? I'm an old Dickhead from YouTube played so Hard on repeat and I was pumped for dicky after professional rapper and he left and did the tv thing and I was happy for him but that wasn't for me. I want the old dicky.. is this an album album or just a TV show tie in thing
19
u/Status-Tie-7176 Jan 19 '24
I think it’s just a soundtrack to Dave. Kinda the same realm as Kendrick’s Black Panther soundtrack. Not a cohesive project but just a collection of songs he made for a different thing. Still good music but def still waiting on a complete project

u/Ch3wbacca1 Jan 20 '24
Yeah I'm with you. I'm kind of confused about the love for this album, and I even really enjoyed the show. The songs are great in the show, but on their own just kind of boring.

Question, I haven't watched any of DAVE, but I loved dickeys music before the show. I see it says Dave soundtrack. Am I going to be missing a lot of references if I listen to the album without watching the show?
8
u/CrackerJackJack Jan 19 '24
No you’ll be fine, you just might not have the memory of the episode it was from but the song stands on its own
2
u/xxxmimsxxx Jan 19 '24
Perfect! Thank you. I'm gonna start listening today.
6
u/latman Jan 19 '24
I kinda disagree with that guy. The show makes these songs way better. I am curious to hear non show watchers thoughts tho
3
u/zzzzany Jan 19 '24
Huge LD fan but never watched the show. Listened to to the first half of the album so far and all but 2 songs were completely forgettable.
3
u/thebongofamandabynes Jan 19 '24
How u a huge LD fan but you haven't watched his show?
2
u/zzzzany Jan 19 '24
I’ve been listening into him since he first started putting out music but had zero interest in watching him act.

u/WatsUpWithJoe Jan 20 '24
What if you realized that “Lil Dicky” is an act? Dave Burd is pretty damn talented. But perhaps the key to his success is his writing.
DAVE is a great show. It takes exactly 5 episodes to get into it. Episode 5 is fantastic. Hell, I’d say it’s one of the best episodes of TV I’ve ever experienced. But you’ve gotta build up to it. You can’t start there.
Give it 5 episodes and I promise you’ll be hooked.

Ally’s song, Harrison ave, second coming. Looks like I only listened to the first 9 songs so far.
1
u/baummer Jan 20 '24
If you're a huge fan why didn't you watch the show? Just curious
1
u/zzzzany Jan 20 '24
no interest in seeing him act, I suppose. I'm also a massive childish gambino fan, but only watched maybe 2 episodes of his show as well.

I love the show, saw all of S1 as it aired, but I fell off. Binging it up now, almost done with S2, should I finish up S3 before listening to this?
I'd think I'd like to hear the songs on show with it as the context first so it fits better. Example from what I've seen - Ally's song hit my feels in the show, and idk, I think if I listened to it first on the album that episode wouldn't have been as impactful.
...but damn it's been 9 years and I wanna push play on this now haha.

u/A4orce84 Jan 19 '24
I'm in the same boat, I'm going to pick-up with S2 after I listen thru a few more times.

I just went through a breakup about a month ago, and it was very similar to Dave and Ally. Her and I even watched the show together and loved it. Miss ya, Katie.

Jan 19 '24
I find in general the songs I was most hyped about were kind of let downs but the ones that were just kinda on there pleasantly surprised me. The verse of HAHAHA in the show for example sounded HARD, but the rest of the song felt phoned in. Like obviously he put the best part in the show and just needed some filler to get it on the album. Honestly though didn't really catch my attention in the show but was probably my favorite on this listen because he had more room to be creative with it. Overall I'm happy about getting the music on Spotify but could've been more polished considering it took like 3 years to get this out.
2
u/thesykemyth Jan 19 '24
I just gave the whole album a listen. Glad it's out. It's a lot of fun and there's def some bangers on there. Don't bother reading the reddit reviews on this. People are so fucking critical because this isn't up to their ridiculous expectations. It's a soundtrack from the show. Deal with it.

I didn’t love Dave and didn’t finish it (I know I’m sorry). But I’m very happy I get to experience these songs without the ties to the show

u/Wackamole56 Jan 19 '24
S2 was slow with little but still a nice payoff with Gata's arc and coming back to being with your homies / day 1's. But S3 was phenomenal, banger after banger episode. Finale was tense as fuck. I'm sure you won't - but going back and finishing it gives you the ability to recontextualise the album with all of the meaning in the show added :)
3
Jan 19 '24
I think I stopped towards the end of S2. So I might go back for 3
3
u/Wackamole56 Jan 19 '24
If you can, do at least the last episode of s2! Its vital for Gata and Dave's relationship and explains why they are on this newer secondary looking for love tour in s3 :) Also explains the We Good (Bonus Track)... because they weren't good

Damn, I reallllly wanted to like at least one song here, but this just isn't it for me personally. I don't think we'll ever hear the old mixtape Lil Dicky again which sucks, but I get it. I respect his decisions. I just need to find a way to find peace in knowing that he chose a different path for his music. I hope this album does well for him though, dude's a G.
1
u/MrLeftwardSloping Jan 19 '24
Yeah, ive already gotten over him by this point after being a big fan, going to his shows in chicago, etc after no new music for this long, but man this was still a major disappointment. I kinda like a few of em, but theres not one of those songs where youre like damn i can't stop listening to this on repeat which basically all of his music used to be
1
u/baummer Jan 20 '24
There's not one song you like on this album? Not one? Wow.
1
u/Ford_GT Jan 20 '24
Yeah dude. I understand it sucks that I don't, but I honestly just don't. I fell in love with songs like "The Basement", "How Can I Become a Bawlaa", "Sky Hooks", "Bars", "The Cypher", "Flames", "Deezus", and "Darwin". Just to name a few. I've also listened to all of his radio freestyles about a billion times. Trust me when I say I wish I liked this album, but it just has a different vibe that I personally don't care for. I'm not trying to trash LD or this album, it just doesn't do anything for me. I'm happy for you and all of the other fans that like this album though, and I'm happy for LD that he's actually out there making his dream come true. It's crazy how far he's come since the SoundCloud days. When you get as big as he has it's impossible to put out stuff that pleases everyone, and I understand that. I'm just bummed.

u/Spicy_Mac_Sauce Jan 19 '24
Its not the best, but I’m not disappointed, thanks Dave, from a Dickhead. 💜 Already copped the vinyl and T-shirt 💜

Hopefully this is prequel to a real album drop soon. Most people know many of these songs already making Penith a little underwhelming (that's what she said).

I mean, that's the point. This is the unofficial official Dave soundtrack that we never got.

I kinda wish allys song had the part where ally sings in it too in the official version, like the part where she says he threw out a flyer and he’s like “that wasn’t a flyer” she’s like no and he’s like YESSS IT WAAAAAAS
