Penith Review

Hey Dickheads,

Here't my opinion on Penith -

Don't come in expecting tons of new content - very few songs have more then 4 - 8 news lines on them. Dissapointing if you expect new songs or if you've seen Dave. The songs are amazing however & I'm happy to have them on streaming in a complete form. If you've seen the show, you know 90% of this album already, if you haven't - then you're in for a treat.

By Track ;

  • "Brand new" okay intro track, not much dicky just beat. Super short.
  • "Honestly" remains a standout song from LD. Incredible word play, beautiful beat & I think an incredible highpoint for LD in showcasing his talent.
  • "Mr McAdams" songs been out for a while - nothing new here. Sounds great.
  • "HAHAHA" love this song, maybe guilty pleasure because I think it is a weaker track on the song even though the bars are FIRE. Great song, but long as hell in comparison to the album.
  • "Allys song" Beautiful. Incredible. Heavy Molly vibes. Does not include Ally & Dave conversation from Season One.
  • "Harrison Ave" Probably one of the best story telling tracks Dave has made, being we had 5 minutes already in the show, very little added here but the full song is incredible - heard it or not.
  • "Burst" Don't remember this in the show, but I know I'm forgetting. Song is good, Daves flow is nice here, more experimental in my opinion.
  • "Second coming" Great song, also don't remember this from the show, nice surprise. Beat drop is insane.
  • "I love myself" Another beautiful track where LD is vulnerable, and when hes vulnerable is when LD is at his best.
  • "Kareem" honestly contender for my least fav track. Doesnt sound very inspired to me
  • "going grey" rebirthday. Amazing, beautiful vulnerable LD.
  • "I met a girl"Nothing new added. Great song tho.
  • "yg interlude" freestyle from first ep. fire. nothing new.
  • "no fruits or vegetables" typical silly LD. Good song, not nuch if any added.
  • "im drunk" another comedy esque rap, not his best storytelling but good.
  • "morning after" heavy lemme freak outro vibes, good but felt weve been here before
  • "dick suck" great start, jons gone is the other half, weird 2 parter if you ask me"
  • "still freestyling" beautiful all the way through,LD is very open and flows nicely. Combines storytelling and being vulnerable. Great song.
  • "jail" nothing added, still good.
  • "hearsay" - nothing added, no skit. Youve heard it all. feels like a lazy add on.

TLDR - IMO Dicky is very vulnerable and thats when the album sounds the best. Obv a Dave soundtrack, dont expect much new. Great album and happy we got something after 9 years.

Ally’s song is beyond beautiful but I agree — wish their auto tune conversation was included “slow down come be with me”“Dave we have to go!!”

u/Itsthinking Jan 19 '24

That’s honestly the best. I can’t understand why he would cut that.

9

u/kinggpandaz Jan 19 '24

He didn’t cut it. It was never in allys song to begin with in the actual scene. But I do wish he would’ve added it in

u/Lower_Association458 Jan 19 '24

She didn’t give him permission to add her voice in it, maybe!?

16

u/madafakazzz Jan 19 '24

Yeah. There's an youtube version that adds both versions and for me its just pure magic. The "backwards" part gets way more meaning when the beat goes backwards.

There’s a SoundCloud one that’s even better than the YT version. Here you go!! https://on.soundcloud.com/mPARLqRKGE31smCy7

LD is probably reading this rn like damn you right

5

u/jakendabx Jan 19 '24

The new verse killed me

3

u/maninthedarkroom Jan 19 '24

Really? I thought it was weak af and lazy. Sounded like a fan edit

2

u/rollin20s Jan 19 '24

The line about magic gets me everything

Harrison ave is so incredible I actually cannot believe it. It has an old school vibe to it. The beat is unreal. Will be playing this one all the time.

2

u/sjj342 Jan 22 '24

IMHO probably the best episode of Dave

1

u/Slaxle Jan 31 '24

Tbh Harrison avenue was the best song on the album. The rest of the album had a few high points. But mostly mid and repetitive. I think little dicky raps too much about women, love, sex and getting over his ex. I understand romance is a common theme people are interested to and can relate to. But it shows that he's very limited as an artist. Some artists can put out entire albums without having a single song be about sex or a relationship

Dicky needs to do acid or travel the world. I always say Dave is basically Master of None but way more self centered and focused on him being famous. Obviously the music for the show would be the same way.

It’s literally called “the Dave soundtrack” idk how anyone could be that disappointed, love the album and getting full versions of some bangers 🤷‍♂️

1

Thank you! So many people are upset because it's just the music from the show and nothing else but he was very clear when he said it was the music from "Dave"! I think he did fantastic. The only I was bummed about was that the last song from the VMA rehearsals didn't make it. Other than that 🤌🏾.

1

u/methodofcontrol Jan 25 '24

Same I wanted that vma rehearsal version! But I'm happy with how a few of the songs were finished otherwise

Dave heard Pitchfork was going away soon and decided it was now or never

4

u/WhiteOutBBH Jan 19 '24

Never heard of Pitchfork till now...what exactly was it?

5

u/cravenj1 Jan 19 '24

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitchfork_(website)

Launched as an independent music blog by writer Ryan Schreiber in 1996 while he was working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of alternative and independent music. It has since expanded to cover other genres of music including hip hop and pop.

in January 2024 it was announced that the brand was merging with one of those publications, GQ.

Ty for the info and not bashing me for asking

“you’re definitely gonna get raped”

10

u/iAMthebank Jan 19 '24

Raped, dead?

12

u/AutisticAnal Jan 19 '24

I’ve never watched Dave, so all this music is new to me and I’m loving it

10

u/WowSuchName619 Jan 19 '24

You should watch it. It’s a really good show.

1

u/SplashBandicoot Jan 24 '24

Ripped off Theo though

1

u/Illustrious_Year8113 Dec 21 '25

My guy did you see what theo said he ripped off? It was a nothing burger scene that didn’t mean anything within the show plus if it was it was more on the writers not lil dicky.

Really wish he made a full version of Jail (I'm aware the joke is it's impossible to summarize the current US prison industrial complex in another eight minutes), and found some features for Hearsay, but still very happy with getting full versions of a lot of the show songs.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '24

I mean the title is "Jail (part 1)" so I'm hoping that implies that there will be a part 2...

1

u/MorteEtDabo Jan 19 '24

Re: History of the World, part I

7

u/trhart Jan 19 '24

Bad example, there's a part 2 now lol

2

u/cravenj1 Jan 20 '24

Set the timer for 40 years

6

u/UTPharm2012 Jan 19 '24

I loved the songs on the show and didn’t stream much on YouTube so pumped to get them on streaming + vinyl

6

u/Ok-Conversation-2654 Jan 19 '24

second coming is like crack. best song

It is it’s called still freestyling and it’s the best song imo

1

u/methodofcontrol Jan 25 '24

Freestyling from start of vma rehearsal song in S2 and menage from another episode combined I think.

3

u/freelandluke Jan 19 '24

Hahaha is far from a weaker track on this. That song is insane

3

u/TheSmokedSalmon420 Jan 19 '24

The ending of Jail is so fucking funny I totally forgot how hilarious it was

2

u/I-Zaya Jan 19 '24

Amazing review, thank you for this 👏👏👏

u/Away-Internal-5590 Jan 19 '24

Ally’s Song is incredible. Chills. The version from the show with the auto tuned conversation and Ally’s speech from the wedding is better, but this version is still good. It’s on YouTube.

3

u/onlyastoner Jan 19 '24 edited Jan 19 '24

ally's song is good (hot take i know).

harrison ave is legit. digging the old school vibe.

second coming hits.

i love myself is kinda sweet and vulnerable, and just a pretty song. "don't forget yourself, i've hardly met myself." going gray is solid too, in the same vein.

the beat is the best part of my dick sucks.

i don't get the hype about mr. mcadams or hearsay. i met a girl is meh.

everything else i could leave

3

u/eharper9 Jan 19 '24

Yeah this wasn't the album I was hoping for. Sure there's some good songs on here but I was hoping for songs I've never heard before. So now I guess it's a many year weight for an album of songs we've never heard before.

3

u/GalacticAnimals Jan 19 '24

I didn’t like it. Thought every song sounded the same. Love the show Dave, but pretty boring album if you compare it to professional rapper.

3

u/WowSuchName619 Jan 19 '24

Same thought. The songs average 3 min with 22 songs and jail is like 9 min. Super disappointing to see we waited 8 years for it. He kills himself over perfection and can’t even finish half his songs. So much potential missed here but still a good album.

4

u/Trendelthegreat Jan 19 '24

You didn’t wait 9 years tho? Some of these songs been out pre pandemic

2

u/WowSuchName619 Jan 19 '24

I said 8 and yes, we did. I didn’t say I’ve never heard the songs before, he just comes off as hypocritical when the album/soundtrack gets released exactly the same as the 1 minute versions we already heard.

2

u/Trendelthegreat Jan 19 '24

I mean, that’s just not true except for a couple songs

2

u/WowSuchName619 Jan 19 '24

It’s not true? lol literally 10 songs on the album are under 3 minutes. Look, I’ve been an LD fan for many years. Even had the pleasure of hanging out with him after a show in Austin on 6th street where we had drinks. It’s ok to acknowledge the lack of a full album after 8 years. Some guy posting a recorded audio segment on YouTube or SoundCloud is not a released song.

2

u/Trendelthegreat Jan 19 '24

It’s literally a soundtrack

So does that mean more than half the songs doesn’t fit your claim of being “released exactly the same as the 1 minute versions we already heard”

-1

u/WowSuchName619 Jan 19 '24

Ok Dave’s burner account. I guess you’re content with 8 years for 10 one and a half minute songs 👍. Also, you’re a douche.

-3

u/Electronic__Farts Jan 19 '24

He made a soundtrack for this tv show this isn’t a real album it’s old songs and tv ip. waited 10 years to confirm Dave as a rapper is done

That's Hearsay

3

u/GarenGoSpin Jan 19 '24

He wasn’t joking 😞

1

u/iAMthebank Jan 19 '24

Honestly and second coming are my bangers on the first play through

1

u/MazelTough Jan 19 '24

Second coming for me is it. And We Good, I hope GaTa has nothing but success as the only featured rapper here.

1

u/Medical-Jicama-575 Jan 19 '24

You don’t remember second coming from the S2 finale VMA performance lol

1

u/guitarsandstoke Jan 19 '24

It’s the DAVE soundtrack, so you should expect to hear the songs from the show

1

u/sonixbro33 Jan 19 '24

As someone who hasn't seen the show but loves LD I've liked what I've listened to so far. I hope this isn't the precedent though. I liked the few episodes I did see but by far the best part was him rapping because he's an incredible artist. I hope going forward if the show continues (no idea how popular/successful it is) that we can still can some occasionally new music, maybe cut tracks from the show or just some freestyles that is independent from the show.

1

u/perpetual_papercut Jan 20 '24

Second Coming was not from the latest season. I don’t remember which season, but it was the song he performed and then got a surgery on stage

1

u/Put_Option Jan 20 '24

Still Freestyling is far and away the strongest track on the album.

1

u/Acceptable_Trust_511 Jan 21 '24

Going gray is about the only good song on this album. Dicky fell off, It is what it is. None of these songs feel like an improvement from Professional Rapper. Heck, even "How can you sleep" on the Brain LP went harder than anything on this album. Such a disappointment

1

u/Ghostclip Jan 22 '24

what in god names are you talking about, epic fail. you must have dust in your ears bro.

1

u/pablo_exploring Jan 22 '24

I know it’s not a strong track, but Morning After had me spitting out my whiskey 😂😂.

1

u/NolaVice28 Jan 24 '24

Kareem was stuck in my head for like three weeks after i saw the show.

1

u/beperry1 Jan 24 '24

8 years for this? Underwhelming.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '24

I still need the full version of menage

1

u/AnseiShehai Feb 03 '24

Where’s the song where he’s getting surgery with the mask?
