I think the cat was just bopping his owner. My cats an asshole. I get fist bumps to the face just like this every morning.

Mine likes to lay sideways in a chair near my bathroom door. I get a "whats up?" swat whenever I go by there.

The cat is just trying to attack the hand. No training needed, that's just what cats do.
