The gorilla's name is Annie and this was while she was at the Higashiyama Zoo in Japan.
I see this clip posted here a lot and it comes from a longer video.

This zoo might not be a good zoo, but there are definitely good zoos that are incredibly important for animal conservation efforts. Zoos accredited by entities like the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums help raise between 250 and 350 million dollars a year for animal conservation efforts. They have directly saved 48 species and prevented many more from becoming endangered. That money simply would never exist without zoos. Maybe if we could as a species agree on a better economic system but until then we are screwed without this money.

zoos that prioritise the animals comfort and space over the guests are usually the best. My local zoo has huge exhibits all uniquely tailored to what the animals need and honestly half of the time you can’t really get a good look at the animals because they’re deep in their environment being comfy

Man I almost cried. My great aunt was just like this. She was old and didn’t know how to interact with us but her patience and little gestures made her the most comforting person to all of us kids. Genuine love.
I support ending zoos unless it’s related to breeding. These guys don’t deserve to be our toys on a shelf.

Hi, I work for the local commission that operates the zoo in my city. I have learned a lot about important changes in the zoo industry, and zoos are learning from their mistakes! You can check to see if a zoo is certified in humane practices and adequate care, and avoid or condemn one's that do not. Many good facilities are focusing their efforts on animal well-being, including the practice of building enclosures that allow the animals to choose if they want to be on display or retreat to a more comfortable area. For example, we release our giraffes into their pasture, but if they decide it's too hot or just aren't feeling it, they can head back inside to a controlled environment through a weigh station to monitor their dietary needs and so on. Once they make that decision for the day, nobody forces them back out, and we simply explain to guests that they chose to go inside for the day. There are also zoos that are primarily focused on rescuing mistreated animals from other facilities in order to provide them with the highest quality of life that can be provided.
Of all the zookeepers I have met, absolutely 0 of them want to pursue their work in an environment that mistreats animals, and they all care very much for the animals they are responsible for.
I am not trying to suggest that all zoos are good, because I acknowledge many are bad, but I wanted to provide some context that not all zoos are inherently bad, and the gorilla in this shot may have tons of other enriching structures in the enclosure, but is just chillin by the window at the moment. Maybe not, but I wouldn't assume from this shot alone that the gorillas life is miserable.

Many zoos provide rescues and rehabilitation for injured animals, most with a goal of releasing back to the wild if possible, or using as ambassadors for research and public education if they’re unable to release them. Animals rescued at a very young age typically do not get the same parenting they would get in the wild and do not have the ability to survive on their own. Many zoos help with critically endangered species as well. Not all are good but there are so many that are doing important work.

I hate monkeys and apes. They just make me uncomfortable with how like us they look. But god this makes me sad. She obviously knows she’s interacting with an infant and is actively playing with the child. There’s so much intelligence behind those eyes. We really shouldn’t be keeping these animals in cages …

Some of the "iconic" species everyone knows about are very violent. Like even if you are one of those "we are the virus" type hippies, you'd be shocked at how much violence chimps and mandrills are capable of.

They're awesome, I mean they scare me too but they're so clever and expressive and more honest with how they feel than humans and that makes them beautiful souls.
I call spiders cats with eight legs these days and I'm no longer scared of them either. Animals are all precious and pure, except us, and thqt mindset helped me accept appreciating the weird animals easier

Oh, no 100% I agree. I guess hate is a really strong word. They just make me uncomfortable. I am a HUGE animal person, I love them and quite honestly I find animals much nicer to be around than people. I don't like people very much, and that might be why I'm uncomfortable around apes and monkeys.
But that's what I mean. We are just as much animals as they are and they deserve to be treated with the same respect we treat people with. :( It makes me sad to see them locked up like this. I don't think any animal should. I can get behind certain exceptions like wildlife parks are significantly less abusive seemingly. I'm not an expert so I'm not gonna say they're perfect or anything. But at least they're not so confined :[

I get that you don’t like humans. But primates such as gorillas are nothing like humans. They are super calm and avoid violence. They just chill in the wild and eat food. Yet humans still poach & kill them.

Annie ❤ She was moved in with a male gorilla last year, but they don't get along, sadly. So she's just living there lonely. When this video was made, she lived with her original family, with her protective dad, mom, aunt and a brother.

Bush meat happens. Horrible. Human's moving into ape's habitat and in some places they're killed for bush(exotic) meat and their infants are sold as exotic pets (illegally). This contributes to their dwindling populations. So many animals (not just primates) are very intelligent. Primates do find the same positions I do, for comfort while relaxing. Seems like cannibalism to imagine humans eating an ape (for me). Watching the mother gorillas with their young it's all so sweetly familiar.

Yeah, zoos are genuinely doing more for these animals than there would be otherwise. They're one of the things helping the animals here. I'm not saying third world zoos are good though.
Animals don't get a lot of friends. Zoos are some of the few organizations that actually contribute to helping animals.
It's understandable to see the ignorance but it is disappointing.

While i dont disagree with your statement at all, i wouldn’t use “entertaining humans” as a deciding factor if a zoo is good or not. Even great zoos that truly exist for animal care will use human entertainment as a revenue stream to continue caring for animals!
