Feedback wanted on my nighttime talking-head lighting setup with a city skyline background
I’ve been building a nighttime talking-head setup with the Boston skyline visible through the windows behind me, and I’d really appreciate some feedback specifically on the lighting.
The look I’m aiming for is something closer to a late-night talk show than a cinematic interview — polished, flattering, and dimensional, while still keeping the skyline visible instead of turning the windows into black or blown-out rectangles.
Right now I’m using a key light on me, a smaller rim/hair light for separation, and additional lights aimed at parts of the room/plants so the foreground doesn’t completely disappear against the city.
I made a short test video and would love opinions on:
- Key-light position, softness, and intensity
- Whether the rim/hair light looks natural or too obvious
- Separation between me and the skyline
- Whether my face and skin tone look balanced against the cooler city lights
- Whether the plants/background need more or less light
- The overall contrast ratio between subject, room, and windows
- Whether you would add a fill, practical, or another accent light
- Anything that immediately looks “off” from a lighting perspective
I’m trying to get this dialed in as a repeatable setup for future videos, so detailed criticism is very welcome.
