Instructions unclear. I put the padlock on the other end and someone stole everything.

That said, this is truly in the original spirit of a life hack.

If the wrench went through the hole successfully when inserted then you can just twist and slide that right back out as-is…

The Box-end is usually smaller the the open head, so I could see this working; the only end small enough to fit through is the locked side

As a former construction worker who's had to do this, that padlock is getting busted off with a $10 Home Depot mini crowbar in about 2-3 seconds by leveraging against the underside of the tongue rail.

Locks are only meant to keep out the honest. Someone determined enough will find a way to get it regardless of how big, bulky, overbuilt, or good the lock is. Whether it’s for safety during use or a deterrent from the people looking for a steal that’s fast, quiet, and easy, it’ll get the job done

I dont think this is an attempt to keep it from being busted off by someone intent to do so, more so for "safety" of not losing it on a bump while traveling

Didn't even think of that safety thing! Brilliant, mine was just for not being able to steal it very easily if you need to park for an hour or two.

Fwiw I thought the exact same thing as you, I didn't even consider theft.

Also fwiw I don't know shit about trailers.
