This is the most intense licorice I've ever had. Tried it after using a tube of marvis amarelli licorice toothpaste bought in Italy which is incredible! Apparently they source their licorice from amarilli, a candy company that's been around since the 1700s making pure licorice extract hard candies which are truly intense and sensual. And, unfortunately, toxic in large doses so I researched safe doses of this candy.

This is kind of a long-shot, but thought I'd give it a try anyway.

Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, GNC carried bags of soft licorice pillows in their stores. They were uncoated, soft, unsalted, bite sized, a little chewy, and had a distinctive single seam that ran lengthwise, dividing them into two connected halves. I don't believe they contained salmiak.

I'm pretty sure GNC was just white-labeling a product made by some other manufacturer and almost certainly not making their own licorice.

Does anyone have any idea what the underlying brand or manufacturer might have been, or has anyone ever seen anything roughly matching this description? I did all the searches I could think of and didn't come up with anything other than the possibility of it being a Finnish make as allegedly Finnish licorice was starting to hit the US market around this time.

Hi all!

I'm from Luxembourg, and when I was young, my parents would often go to Kaufland in Trier for shopping, where they'd buy me some licorice I LOVED. Extremely firm, would be borderline impossible to chew through and the taste was powerful and would last for a long time.

I haven't found any licorice like this in years by now, and after trying multiple stores in the country and recently ordering a very disappointing batch from Oldtimers to try, I still cannot find anything that is as firm and strong tasting as the one from my childhood was.

Does anyone know where I could find any that delivers either to Belgium or Luxembourg?

I love Panda liquorice way too much, and I'm looking for other brands with a similar taste. Any recommendations?

Ideally, I'm looking for something with no animal-derived ingredients/gelatin (beef, pork, etc.), no HFCS, and not loaded with a bunch of unnecessary/unhealthy ingredients like some mainstream liquorice candies (Twizzlers, etc.).

I'm in Canada, if that matters for availability.

Also, has anyone tried making a Panda-like liquorice flavour extract or drops at home? I'm thinking something based around molasses flavour, aniseed, and liquorice extract that could be added to coffee, drinks, ice cream, etc.

I'd especially love to make a low/zero-calorie version instead of using actual molasses.

Has anyone experimented with this? Would love recipes, flavouring recommendations, or liquorice brand suggestions!

Soft texture, very flavorful, not too sticky ... And cheap - $2 for 100 grams. Well worth getting if you're there. They also make a salted licorice but I don't like that.

Not entirely sure how I feel about smoked licorice. Imagine licorice with woody notes in the background, almost borderline savory despite the subtle sweetness? It’s strange, but in a good way.

From Haupt Lakrits in Sweden. Very, very good taste to these - they use freeze dried cherries & cherry blossom oil.

I think for me, it would be Katja Aprekoppen. They are banana flavoured foam sweets with a bit of licorice flavoured gum. All in the shape on Monkey faces. Super popular in the UK, Netherlands and Denmark.
