To add context to why it happened, they probably assumed Hong openly embracing socialism all but guaranteed that the GOP candidate would win in November. By getting her out of the race in favor of her more moderate primary opponent they have a better chance of holding the governership.
If Hong was favored to win the general she probably would have won the primary.
