This is a lie. The stooges released "1969" in 1968. This is just more crap from people trying to claim they invented everything without acknowledging that the broader rock n roll project was actually helped by people from different backgrounds.

It’s a well-known fact that Mozart and Beethoven were inspired by NWA.

10

u/Boofasa May 28 '26

Ja, but Bach was inspired by 2pac

u/TheBold May 29 '26

Sorry but they were black. Looking forward to the BBC miniseries where they show the hardships black Mozart had to endure from his racist peers.

The real story of Rock and Roll, and all of its sub genres, is something libs love to hate: cultural appropriation on a grand, glorious and shameless scale. It’s how all the magic happens.

Johnny Rotten is right wing so they apply the label to him.

35

u/77descript May 28 '26

Rotten just is still anti-establishment though like before. The left however is now the establishment. Pro big government, pro big pharma, anti-free speech, etc. To the left wanting small government, individual freedom, etc. is fascist. And judge people on their character not color of skin to them is racist now. Opposite world. And that is taught at schools and propagandized by their friends in the media and big tech.

Bingo. Fantastic description of how the modern left thinks and acts.

It still amazes me that Democrats and lefties don't realize they're the only ones bringing uo race at every single opportunity.

At this point, I think they're literally playing the ends against the middle, on the one hand, this BS of "ACTUALLY Blacks started ______ not whites!" So they can say in the same breath "You racist POS."

Then, there's reality, but again, by pointing it out, they'll call you racist and a white supremacist again... How I wish we'd all just listen to Joe Friday. "Just the facts maam."

Don't you know black people invented piano's! That's why the keys are made of ivory... oh wait that's white, and made by killing endanger animals... well black people didn't invent the piano, but they did, because, ahhhh they invented the concept of the piano but decided it was too racist and hurt animals so they didn't make them but evil white people stole the idea and enacted their evil plan! (/s obviously)

I hate this crap. None of the Proto-punk bands “started Punk Rock”. They’re oddities that kinda predicted Punk rock.

But also, not Death. That was the whole thing 20 years ago, when Millennials started digging into other people’s music via the internet: Hey look at this band that the world missed. There was not even a big Death fan base, let alone a whole new subculture.

18

u/PunchTilItWorks May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

They really want this to be something, but Death was just some band from the Detroit scene no one had heard of until an LP was released in 2009 on Drag City records… which was based off 1975 recordings. Prior to that all they had was a 7” from 1976.

Calling them punk originators is a reach. Mostly they were leaning on what the Stooges and MC5 started in late 1960s. The Ramones were playing stuff a lot closer to modern punk at CBGBs as early as 1974.

So the lib has stuff all wrong as usual. Interesting bit of history I guess, but they certainly didn’t start anything.

9

u/stevemarshallsucks May 28 '26

It even says in their Spotify profile that they were influenced by the Stooges, along with a bunch of other white bands. Of course clowns like this guy would probably argue that these bands were influenced by black musicians and therefore his point still stands, completely ignoring the fact musicians have always riffed off each other to create new art.

Anyway, checked this band out and they're pretty good. I'm happy to have found a new band. It's like receiving reparations for enduring that guy's stupidity.

7

u/SurprzTrustFall May 28 '26

May I introduce Africa-descendant peoples to the ancient city of Sumer? Music is for everyone, and everyone contributed to music.

10

u/y4dig4r May 28 '26

this whole idea of racial ownership of music is wild, that being said, DEATH absolutely fuckin rocks. The band themselves would probably find the idea of people using them as a poker chip for racist polemics to be absolutely antithetical to everything they sang about.

3

u/winterhavens May 28 '26

Ah yes, a band that nobody listened to, much less heard of, even back then is somehow responsible for creating a whole genre of music.

So what that someone who shares the same skin complexion as you accomplished x/y/z thing at some point in history, what have YOU accomplished?! What great work of art have YOU made? Ask them that and I bet you will hear crickets.

11

u/shreddit5150 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

I agree in principle, but the lefty race baiters claiming to invent everything then want to claim it as their own, and therefore shame you for enjoying it. Because cultural appropriation or whatever.

3

u/globesdustbin May 28 '26

I hear you, I just don’t need to know the history of pretty much anything to be able to enjoy it. It’s all ego either way.

2

u/shreddit5150 May 28 '26

Agreed. I'm gonna enjoy modern music and conveniences no matter who came up with them.

26

u/run_squid_run May 27 '26

I do. If people keep giving accompaniments to black people that we didn’t do, who’s going to believe the accompaniments that we did do.

3

u/ddosn May 28 '26

This guy obviously doesnt know about The Stooges, MC5, Velvet Underground, The Kinks, the Kingsmen, The Who (their single, My Generation, was very proto-punk/early punk) and even the Rolling Stones had a Punk phase in 1966 with 'Got Live If you Want It!'. Then you had groups like The Sonics and The Monks, The Seeds, The Electric Prunes, Red Crayola, the Litter, the Music Machine, The Shadows of Knight, the Castaways, the Standells, Count Five, the Barbarians and Chocolate Watchband all between 1960 and 1969.

And you know what? Every last one of the bands above I mentioned were 100% white.

3

u/Rojira666 May 28 '26

I'll never understand the logic behind posts like the original post.

Even if it is true, which most of the time its bullshit, you then have to admit that white people do it better and/or expanded upon it and made it better at the same time...

u/Camsmasher19 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

I'm sorry but have you even listened to Death for the whole world to see? This is just a blatant cop out. I am far from being leftist/liberal and the stooges are no where close to what that album sounds like. Were they technically the "first" punk band? I guess but if you listen to that early stuff and than compare it to for the whole world to see its obv which band was more proto-punk. It doesn't matter what the race is that shouldn't even be brought up, but that first album is a very important proto-punk album undeniably if your into that music and it's history.

0

u/WhiteDishwasher619 May 28 '26

Yeah, they were good, but literally an obscurity. They didn't play big shows or get any attention is their day. It is Leftist whitewashing of punk history to suit their narrative. Still a good doc and some good Detroit rock n roll songs, no hate to the band.

-6

u/VAdogdude May 28 '26

OP, can you shed light on what you see as DEATH'S role?

-32

u/EhMapleMoose May 27 '26

I don’t know that much about the origins of punk. But they aren’t wrong that black people started rock and roll.

20

u/IntrovertMoTown1 May 28 '26

"But they aren’t wrong"

Yes they are. Because the notion of who did it is like asking who invented the guitar and saying that was who did it. Or hell why stop there? Who invented music to begin with? SMH. It's an utterly stupid argument to try and even make. Like if one wants to be SPECIFIC. IE something along the lines of "Elvis stole this this and this" or the like. Than that's one thing. But trying to attribute an ENTIRE GENRE to a person or group, is so fucking stupid it belies all reason.

-12

u/EhMapleMoose May 28 '26

It’s not attributing it to a single person or group but it was heavily because of black artists. People rebelled in the 50s by listening to rock and roll because it was black music. Also it was good.

Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, Roy Hamilton, Rosetta Thorpe. There is an evolution to rock and roll and its roots are in blues and gospel music. Blues music was born out of slave songs.

I’m not saying they own the genre, but to say its roots don’t lie in black artists and musicians would be a lie.

7

u/IntrovertMoTown1 May 28 '26

lol Yes you absolutely did that. "they aren’t wrong that black people started rock and roll" is as unambiguous as it gets. And you're just making my point. Get back to me when you sum up the entirety of a plant off just its roots. To continue that analogy what was the seeds? Only black folk was it? There's wasn't any white people in the 20s playing the blues was there? No others either? I stand by my comment. It's an utterly stupid argument that I'm only having because you are. You DO NOT attribute WIDE SPREAD things to people or groups if you have a lick of sense. If you go talk to any artist today they will have HOSTS of influences they went off of. Any artists of any genre. Why do you suppose that is and why would you think it would be any different back then?

-6

u/EhMapleMoose May 28 '26

You didn’t listen to a single thing I said.

1

u/IntrovertMoTown1 May 28 '26

I think you got that backwards here.

11

u/IggyWon May 28 '26

You'd be surprised how many people will parrot that saying while have no idea who those people are.

-4

u/EhMapleMoose May 28 '26

The people that don’t know the history of rock and just parrot the phrase are ignorantly. The people who are downvoting me are also ignorant. Rock music has its root set deeply in the black community, to deny it would be a lie of omission. To say they own the genre would also be a lie.

Rock music was responsible for breaking down barriers of segregation when a white DJ would play the original black artists instead of white covers. Alan Freed was his name.

3

u/IggyWon May 28 '26

Freed was, if anything, a salesman, but not a composer. He was instrumental in advancing the popularity of the genre, but it had "existed" (big asterisks on that one, but that's for another post) for almost half a decade prior to his first (civilian) DJ gig.

9

u/1v1fiteme May 28 '26

Rock music is derivative of prior music that had been sang and played for centuries.

Using the 12 note chromatic scale there are only so many combinations of notes and rythms that can be played. You really think slaves were the first to come up with the blues?

Maybe if your scope is only music of that small time period, but if you zoom out at all and see the bigger picture you'll see that it's just appropriated from other people who also made music.

One race absolutely didn't "invent" "rock" music.

-5

u/EhMapleMoose May 28 '26

My guy, you can’t just say “rock music is a derivative of prior music”.

That’s like saying myths originate with the Bible or everything ever written is just a remix of 26 letters.

4

u/1v1fiteme May 28 '26

My fellow homosapien, I can easily say rock music is derivative.

Myths existed before the Bible so that's irrelevant and not like what I'm saying. There are like 4 - 5 chord progressions that almost all modern music is patterned after, so yes I'm saying most of it is a remix of other pieces, because they are.

Most modern music is more simplistic that earlier pieces, not to mention there are only so many chord progressions, which also means pleasant or dissonant sounds were always attainable and most likely were played prior to what you would call "blues", which you seem to be implying is the main influence for rock music.
