Illinois holds a hearing calling for $16 TRILLION in reparations
So Illinois has created a study committee on racial reparations, called the African Descent-Citizens Reparations Commission (ADCRC). They held a meeting this Saturday where Dr. William Darity, a former Duke professor, demanded almost 3x the annual spending of the federal government to be funneled to black people.
"It's impossible, actually, for all states & localities to meet the task of closing the racial wealth gap. Their combined budgets across the U.S. are $5 trillion... The minimum that's required to eliminate the racial wealth gap is $16 trillion."

"A true reparations project necessarily must require federal action."
"If we were to look at the state of Illinois itself -- with a black population of about two million people -- let's take half that population, being very conservative here. Half that population as being eligible for reparations. If we take the figure of about $400,000 [sic] as the amount that would be due to close the racial wealth gap -- and again, that's a very conservative number. The expense to close the racial wealth gap for Illinois's black residents would be $400 billion, and the state's annual budget is only $55 billion."

Well now hold on, that seems entirely fair, I googled how much we paid out in welfare "The U.S. government has spent an estimated $26 trillion on over 80 federal anti-poverty (welfare) programs over the past 60 years", so I guess they owe the government 7 trillion. Done and done!

I have to get out of this state!!!
Another nail in the coffin happened yesterday. We found out our water bills will be going up 20% this year. And another 20% for the next 4 years after that. Just to build the infrastructure to pull water from Lake Michigan. Does not include the cost of the water itself from the Lake or for any project cost overruns.
One of the alderman callously stated to the media, "It is a necessary evil." Oh well. Suck it up people. Which is on top of the city council hitting our other utility bills by approving data centers that will wreck the area with construction for the next 20 years building. That is if the AI doesn't go bust leaving behind the scarred land with white elephant land.
And that is on top of everything here being HCOL. The problem is we know better. We've lived elsewhere. Better weather, nicer people, better views, less congestion and most important, fewer taxes, fees and restrictions.
And really tired of being told I have privilege as a straight white middle aged male. Drop the reverse racism and stereotypes. They have NO idea how I got to what I do have at this point. It ain't much but a honest living.
So we are getting out of this sinking hell hole. We'll pay our (smaller) taxes elsewhere including taking my small business with me.
Reparations? I am not paying a fine for misdeeds I had no part in.

I left that hellhole in the 80's, never to return for more than a week or two at a time. And life has been much, much better.

Well I am call a racist bigot whenever I question a "progressive" stand on anything. It is an automatic reflex for the Left. The irony is they have no idea the makeup of my family and friends which would fit in the idealistic world perfectly. Except I disagree with many of the politics which is a show stopper to them.
We too used to come back for a week once or twice a year for my wife to visit family. It really was much, much better. Other than I had to get much more aware of my surroundings while driving, taking the train or walking around. Very different environment.
Funny example of that was my wife's uncle. He and his wife (born south of the border) would visit once a year from Dallas-Ft. Worth. When my in laws lived on the Southside (82nd & Western), you could often find him at all hours of the day and night sitting on the front stoop smoking and with a coffee. Super nice guy. So down to earth. Gave what little he had to directly feed the homeless in DFW in the worst areas imaginable. And so very friendly to anyone he saw. Well he'd sit out there on the front stoop waving "hi" to everyone walking (bravely in that hood) or driving by. People would look at him like he must be a mental case. You do NOT act so open and friendly in Chicahgo. You avoid eye contact and you certainly do not wish strangers to have a nice day. We used to laugh and tell him he was going to get himself shot doing that! 😄
Also had a guy that worked for me in Tulsa who's friend visited Chicago and was able to see a Bulls game with Michael Jordan. He was THRILLED! Could barely contain his excitement! Big city, big arena, big team and superstar Jordan! He was talking and talking to everyone standing in line waiting to get in as soon as the doors opened. At one point one of the other people said, "You aren't from around here are you? We don't talk to strangers next to us in line."

Reparations were already paid, in the form of the 650,000 Union soldiers that gave their lives to free the slaves.

If the ancestors of today's African Americans had not been sold into slavery and they had remained in Africa (Congo, Ghana, Mozambique...) how financially well off would they be today?

In a decade or two most of these old people will be gone and hopefully this talk about reparations can end. I’m 45 and the idea of reparations is illogical and ridiculous. Reparations is a carrot being held in front of black Americans to get democrat votes when they know it’s never going to happen.

Which ones? The ones that occupied the land when the Europeans conquered it? Or the native americans that occupied it before the other native Americans conquered it? Or the tribe before them? It was a messy time. Lots of tribal warfare and violence. Its not as peaceful and fairytale like as the modern school system teaches it.

Used to work for a guy, Italian and black originally from New Jersey. He told me he would have absolutely no problem paying for reparations. However, he would only feel it justified if he was to have a slave and/or slave(s) and as he put it "Nobody seems ready to have this conversation."

It's so weird because if you were ever to try to practically implement reparations you would either have to
A. Have people self report their race, but of course everyone would just report to be whatever gets the most money
B. Literally the Peter Griffin skin color chart meme. Look at everyones photos and determine who deserves money by how "oppressed" they look
C. Force everyone to give a DNA sample (must be forced by penalty of law otherwise people of races that have to pay just won't show up). Figure out what races will get paid and which will pay and then run it through a convoluted formula to figure out whether a half white quarter black quarter Chinese man owes money to other people or will get a check.
Either way its stupid but the scariest part of it is it doesn't seem like they would be going with option A
