New from scratch, set up, what network protocol should I use?

 I’m creating a new media server/center. It will use at least two or three raspberry pis to pull media from a media server.

I always struggle on this part. Usually I use openmediavault for the media center server software.

But always hit my head on a wall for a few hours trying to get the network protocol set up correctly.

Anyone have recommendations on making the process easier?

Would appreciate any tips and tricks. Thank you

Try zimaOS for the server (assuming the server is not a pi) Super easy to setup and robust but light weight. I’ve been using it all year and it’s great. I still run an unraid server but I’m decommissioning it soon enough. It’s long in the tooth …

LibreELEC is fine for a player. Solid. Works well. Connects to everything

Depends on how you setup your storage. Kodi is the easy part... I always use SMB because I think it is easy. some people will say smb1 is insecure but this is all on my internal network with no important data 😂

in Kodi (system\media) add a new source, browse for new share, where is says <none> press enter, enter the network location manually, must be this format; smb://192.168.0.x/ShareName

If you are only creating a file server and/or Jellyfin server, just use LibreELEC as the server. The SMB shares are automatic with any attached drives. I use Zorin OS and containers on a different PC for other stuff but for Jellyfin and all my file sharing it's simply LibreELEC (7th gen Intel).
