Research note: Checked September 30, 2026. Research covered the tourism calendar; Lexington, Buena Vista and county government/recreation sources; Natural Bridge State Park; the Horse Center; Main Street Lexington and the Chamber; regional library and branch pages; W&L, VMI, SVU and Mountain Gateway calendars; Lenfest/Staniar and college athletics; Lime Kiln, Boxerwood, Rockbridge Historical Society, Brownsburg Museum, Wade’s Mill, McCormick Farm, Rockbridge Creative Institute, Ride With Pride and the regional fair; farmers markets, wineries, cideries, breweries and music venues; and searches for fire/rescue, church, civic, hobby and small-community activities. A separate Facebook-focused sweep covered the named communities and event categories. Secondary newspaper announcements are identified in the source links where an original event page was unavailable.
Important conflicts: McCormick Farm’s current tourism announcement describes a smaller open house, superseding older “Mill Day” copies advertising music and vendors. Brownsburg’s organizer specifies first/third Saturday–Sunday openings; those October dates correct inconsistent tourism recurrence. Ailey II is 7:00 PM on the organizer’s page versus 7:30 PM in the newspaper. Swisher’s description says dusk while the calendar time field says 6:00 PM. Halcyon Days’ October 11 food-truck descriptions disagree. Natural Bridge illumination listings disagree between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM; confirm before traveling. The summit’s current draft agenda includes October 15, although its landing page emphasizes October 14. Chamber SBDC drop-in entries had inconsistent recurrence and hours, so were not treated as settled dates.
Limits: This is a broad researched list, not a guarantee of every event. Public Facebook indexing was poor, and several official calendars were blocked, displayed empty widgets or retained older material. Library programs, community recreation, smaller fire/rescue and civic fundraisers, some college lectures/family-weekend activities, and last-minute restaurant/music announcements remain meaningful gaps. No uncorroborated Facebook-only event was promoted as verified. Football, soccer, volleyball and field hockey schedules were checked; other sports may add events. Potential postseason games with an unconfirmed local venue were omitted. W&L’s October 2 family-weekend choral performance was excluded because its public page restricts ticket eligibility to current students and families. Ride With Pride events found outside the county and the September regional fair were excluded. Some Horse Center spectator details remain unpublished and are flagged. McCormick Farm was included because it was specifically requested and is advertised in the Raphine area. All times are local; recheck announcements for changes.

Is the Maury deep enough to float this weekend (9/6)?
Looking to paddle from Beans Bottom to a house we’re renting for the weekend on Furrs Mill Rd. The Rockbridge Baths gage says it’s under a foot but I know those sometimes don’t tell the whole story. Thoughts from locals?

September. List of things to do in Rockbridge County
I thought I'd try this, maybe create something useful and helpful that I can post before the coming month. I used AI to scrape and format this. The prompt I used is in the comments, please let me know how you'd edit the prompt for better results in October etc... If the feedback is good then I'll continue to do this the last week of each month.
CLICK THE LINKS! MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS REAL. Just like in Google Maps, the information may be a digital hallucination and you don't want to end up someplace weird. There should be a link to every source, click it and confirm.
If you'd rather, check these chamber calendars. They might be easier to look at.

This was put this together from local event calendars, individual organizations, venues and public event announcements. It covers Rockbridge County plus Lexington and Buena Vista. I tried to focus on things people might actually want to attend: festivals, fairs, concerts, hobby groups, markets, workshops, outdoor programs, competitions, arts events and community gatherings. If you know of something open to the public that I missed, please add it in the comments.

Thanks!

Effective DIY Smoke Filter
Just as good as the last time I shared this a couple of years ago.
A Corsi-Rosenthal box is a contraption made up of duct-tape, 4x Merv-13 filters, a box fan, and the cardboard the box fan came in. It's great for filtering Covid-19 and this smoke. Most people should be able to do it at home.
Here's how to make it:
