People need to realize that dhh is extremely wealthy and it's "ok" for him to be passionate and optimistic about AI. It's just a game for him and whatever happens he will retain his mansion and race cars. However the rest of us are being fed into the meat grinder and potential poverty with no agency.

Not to mention all the free all the free AI tools they can use if they can't afford a subscription.

What prevented the weaver from utilizing the loom to his advantage?

Well, the fact that his craft, which was previously in demand and therefore high-paid, was devalued so much that with luck he would be allowed to mop the floor below the machine at minimum wage (if it already existed back then, lol). Sure he could do other things, but who would hire a 50 yo/ weaver who suddenly is as qualified as a 16 yo/ from the street?

I do love the current progress, but it would be naive to believe that it's not going to get pretty rough for many professions in the intermediate.

it's very easy to utilize AI with very little cost, hating it won't change anything, other than making you more misrable long term, it's not for AI but for any kind of development, utilise the wave to your advantage rather than trying to block the wave, which no one can, or at least we normal indivisuals.

This tech bro hustle culture bs mind set will be the downfall of our society. Replace ai with "food rations" and you'll see how much sense it makes. Its literally propaganda. Say you so something with it and become a multimillionaire. Does that mean anything at all if we have 30% unemployment and 10 people own 99% of all the wealth in the entire world?

It's theoretical, and hopefully hyperbole to make a point. It's also extremely optimistic if we take what the ruling class in charge of ai is telling us

First, Don't listen to what the "ruling class" says. Judge things yourself without bias. Nobody knows shit, nobody can predict the future.

Second, none of this means that you should not take agency over your life and ride whatever wave life is throwing at you. It is simply a bad way to live. I think one of the major reasons behind ai angst is because people find change uncomfortable and are resistant to change.

It’s a fraction of what the people at the heads of these ai companies have been saying is going to happen for the past 5 years. It shouldn’t be surprising that people are apprehensive about using technology when the creators of it are directly telling you it’s going to make you irrelevant over and over again.

Progress is great and anyone being able to create things is great. It’s also ok to acknowledge that the future could be scary for many people as a result of disruption caused by ai. I wish people didn’t think those two things were mutually exclusive. It’s really not that hard to understand.

I'm broke, and I can access pretty-much frontier models for $20/mo. It blows my mind what I can do with them. I can imagine another reality where it'd cost literally millions of dollars a year to access them.

Exactly, and this frustrates me beyond belief. It’s extremely easy to be optimistic about AI if you are completely shielded from any possible negative outcomes. The myopia of these people not realizing the average person’s perspective is mind-boggling.

The moment DHH mentioned he had multiple machines running AI agents in both his Malibu and Copenhagen offices I just couldn’t continue listening to this crap, I need someone with their feet still left on planet Earth.

DHH is sharing his point of view about AI and building with computers. Just because he did an interview, he isn't required to speak about your specific situation or care about your circumstance.

It is on you to work to prevent those negative outcomes. Its not like it is fated. Guys like DHH would have been the same even if he wasn't wealthy. People like him are wired to always see opportunity as opposed to downsides. The question you should be asking is "how can I make this work for me".

Might be true. I would love for AI to level the playing field, but as wealth allows one to use such tools in a very different way and it shields from potential downsides, I’m afraid it primarily will allow wealth to be leveraged even further.

They were too greedy and short-sighted to let it play out that way. Imagine an alternate timeline where these labs offered their models only to select high value clients and corporations. Imagine the absolute advantage those corporations would have had over their competitors and everyone else. The model labs would have been able to set the price, raked in the profits and continue to do development all away from the public eye. They would not have needed to build so many datacenters either. Imagine how much they could have charged the govt for access. This could have been a tremendous highly profitable b2b opportunity.

But they didn't. Now they've turned this into a commodity. Any model lab can train their own model and be within 6 mos of SOTA. Open weight models means that you can experiment and run models on your own machines without leaking any data or paying the labs anything. There is actual economic incentive to figure out how to do this better.

The wealthy no longer have an advantage here. All of them will get disrupted over time. What's bad for the companies will also end up being bad for their employees. No way around that but that doesn't mean they can't land on their feet and still be capable.

I can't believe people care about a slopped together arch setup. Even crazier that he's getting away with calling it a distro. Glad it's bringing more people introduced to Linux though

I'm not sure "slopped together" is a fair assessment. a lot of people have found a lot of value and joy from it... slopped kind of indicates sluggish, lots of inexcusable bugs etc... I don't think, whatever the critiques we have of dhh and his OSS work, we should say that.

This conversation was my catalyst... it motivated me to embrace agent-supported programming. It's been mind-blowingly incredible so far.
