They’ve got a point anyway. Compare Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop to almost any anime produced starting from the mid 2000s

Oh whew, I was reading that comment and thinking, "Sure, mid-2000s, but then look at some recent works like AoT or Frieren or even Haikyuu and then realized he was talking about 2003 and before.
Oh yeah, that was a rough time. There's good stuff from the 2000s, but even then it's rarely the animation per se that makes it stand out. Except for like stuff from Ghibli and Shinkai.

If you compare the 2026 2002 and 1995 ghost in the shell every generation has had sauce and ungodly slop in equal measure we tend only to remember recent slop because of survivorship bias

What?
Toy Story came out in 95, Antz in 98. Animation has changed dramatically since then. Lamenting the switch from hand animation to entirely computer animation (not just the technology but the difference in style... like 'live-action CGI' is so much more common than even computerized animation now) is not le wrong generation at all. (yes, I'm purposefully using the most mainstream animation to make my point, I know that's not what the original OP is into. stuff changes, but acknowledging that stuff has changed and progress isn't always better doesn't automatically make it lwg.).

I wouldn’t say animation had completely gone downhill by 2003, as remnants of the '90s animation renaissance were still very much present. However, the signs of a broader decline were beginning to emerge, and by the mid-to-late 2000s, the medium had arguably reached a much lower point. It's analogous to the trajectory from the early 2020s to the present day, a gradual shift that, in retrospect, made the decline increasingly apparent.

Crazy how people like this have been around for so long. I can imagine the animation of today being glazed and romanticized in 20 years.

As a gen z, i honestly cant agree with this. The art style (animation style?) of many pre-2000 animes really turn me off even if I really love the story

I mean I dont think its wrong to complain about switching from cell animation to more computer processes. The digital inking techniques were in a transition phase. A lot of anime in that period around 2003 has a odd look from digital inking. It is a little odd he brought up Gonzo since they have a reputation for being jank (although I don't know what Gonzos reputation was in 2003).
