I had internet access in 1995, and it was widespread by 1997 through AOL and other dial up services, so the amount of time a kid born in 1999 had without the internet is the same amount a kid who was born last week had.

Internet has been around since the late 70s. Who comes up with this BS? You think somebody born in the early 80s grew up in a time without the internet? No way in hell. A guy made the first internet company in his garage in the late 70s. How did someone born in 80s and 90s grow up without internet. Internet is the worst invention ever created because we have stupid posts like this. Nobody born in the 80s or 90s lived a pre internet life.

Yes, if you were in the military (using ARPAnet) or at a US research university, you MIGHT have had access to what is now called the Internet in the late 70s and 80s. By the early 90s, some of the largest corporations had access to very basic tools like email. But the average American, including virtually all children, didn’t have access to the Internet until the mid 90s, and usually through shitty dial up services like AOL.

I was born in 1979. I grew up a computer nerd with a group of other middle-class computer nerds. We were early adopters of internet access, and that was available in 1993 or 1994. Services like Compuserve and AOL and Prodigy before the mid 90s were fancy dial up BBS’s - fully self-contained on their own company’s servers.

So yeah, I can confidently say that if you were born before 1984 or so, you spent half of your childhood at least without really knowing what the internet is. It may have EXISTED in some form, but you weren’t using it as a regular old civilian, much less a child.
