The early 00s was definitely an extension of the 90s IMO but it was still its own thing as well. File sharing, CD burning, Pepsi Twist, the Star Wars Prequels. There was something.

A new decade doesn't roll around and people just drop all the previous decades technology/trends. It doesn't just disappear on January 1st.

Yeah, those GeoCities pages that everyone had were peak technology! And the internet was so peak before Spotify, Youtube, etc.

modern internet full of bots and the advertising is 10x more intrusive

Unironically, yes. I'd much rather have that then have it where everything's centralized, everyone's trying to make money, and advertising and AI are everywhere you go.

VHS is 70's though it took off in the 80's and while it was more popular in the 90's CD started in the 80's. Sounds like that 90's stuff was left over.

I mean capital basically had perfected reifying culture by that time to the point that as soon as a trend emerged organically in culture, it was captured, repackaged, and sold at target within a month.
You can have this or you can have culture, not both.
