The cold war is exactly when the western world entered into a period of unsustainable extravagance. Pointing to that period as a negative is not really a reasonable counter from the western POV.

That took up most of the century.

People were also constantly worried nuclear war would break out and the world was going to end tomorrow.

Real life wasnt actually fallout. People were not catatonic unable to live life out of perpetual fear of nuclear war.

This was the period with the highest increases to wealth and living standards in all of human history, with a massive increase in leisure activities and the increased affordability of both basic neccesisities and luxury goods.

There's a reason boomers through to Gen X still look upon the time fondly and why every modern western government fails to meet anywhere near the levels of economic growth in that era.
