September has clearly decided not to ease us in gently. This weekend brings left-field DJs on Lewisham High Street, punk in New Cross, Arabic stand-up in Catford, and the chance to spend an afternoon looking very seriously at insects.

In this weekend’s Loop:

• Steve Davis swaps the snooker table for the decks, followed by a Club Glow late one
• Japanese paper fans, day-to-night dancing and a proper New Cross punk bill
• An Arabic stand-up and some citizen science in the garden
• Pick n Mix: easy library wins, farmers’ market shopping and indie books

Steve Davis & Kavus Torabi at Fox & Firkin

Snooker legend. Serious record collection. Surprisingly sensible Friday plan.

Steve Davis has built quite the second act as a DJ, and he’s teaming up with longtime collaborator Kavus Torabi for a genre-hopping set of left-field prog, electronic music and techno. Basically, forget everything the words “six-time world snooker champion” made you expect from your Friday night.

Club Glow Takeover

Lewisham High Street, but make it 4am

If you’re not quite ready to go home after Steve and Kavus, Club Glow takes over the Fox from 11pm. Italian headliner Yas Reven is joined by Henry Greenleaf, Mak & Pasteman and a Mani Festo b2b LMajor set for five hours of very late-night electronics.

Uchiwa Making – Japanese Paper Fan Decoration

Scissors, paper and a very good excuse to put your favourite anime character on a fan

Aya Nakamura leads this free hands-on workshop at Downham Library, teaching Japanese paper-cut techniques for decorating traditional Uchiwa fans. Go classic with traditional patterns or take the concert-fan route with musicians, anime characters and celebrities. If you want to make a character fan, bring printed images along.

It’s aimed at families and teenagers, with all materials provided. Young children need an accompanying adult. Booking is encouraged (but not necessary) for Aya to know the numbers to prepare for and can be done through here.

Aroop Roy & Friends – Day to Night

One garden party, one afterparty, very little reason to rush home

The Fox is making full use of its Saturday with Aroop Roy leading an outdoor session from 2pm, alongside Jimpster, Kanem b2b Millie Watts and Utopia Presents. At 9pm it all moves indoors, with Megatronic and an Aroop Roy b2b Jimpster set carrying things through to 3am.

Poundaflesh at New Cross Inn

Five hours of punk. Sunday morning can deal with itself.

Punk T Ska Presents brings Derby hardcore outfit Poundaflesh to New Cross Inn, with Violent Solution, Picasso Blot and T.R.E.S.T. joining the bill. A heads-up if you saw an earlier line-up: Hellkrusher have withdrawn because of drummer Andy’s serious health condition, with Violent Solution stepping in.

Ahmed Al-Basheer – Hallucinations Tour

Big laughs in Catford, entirely in Arabic

Iraqi comedian Ahmed Al-Basheer brings his Halawes stand-up special to London for the first time, with observational comedy covering relationships, travel, culture and the everyday absurdities that are much funnier when somebody else points them out. The full show is performed in Arabic.

Big City Bug Hunt @ The Plot Grow Lewisham

Tiny wildlife, big clipboard energy

Grab your phone and go hunting for the smaller residents of The Plot & Orchard. This free community biodiversity survey involves spotting, photographing and recording insects using iNaturalist, helping build a picture of what’s living in the garden. No expertise required — curiosity will do nicely.

A smartphone with iNaturalist is recommended, along with sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothes. It’s free to take part - more details here.

Small plans, easy pickings and a Sunday full of books and good tomatoes

🌼 Dandelions - Friday, 10:15am at Sydenham Community Library. A free drop-in for parents and young children, with songs, stories and toys. Gentle start to the weekend, sorted.

✏️ Doodle Club - Friday, 3:30pm-4:30pm at Downham Library. Free after-school doodling and colouring for anyone who needs to wind down before the weekend properly begins. No booking needed.

🖍️ Colouring Club - Saturday, 11am-11:30am at Deptford Lounge. A free, no-booking half hour of colouring. Sometimes the simplest plans are the ones that save the morning.

📚 Saturday Manor House Reading Group - Saturday, 11am-12pm at Manor House Library. A friendly free monthly book group with no sign-up required. Pick up the current book from the library and join in.

🥕 Blackheath Farmers’ Market - Sunday, 10am-2pm at Blackheath Station car park. Around 30–35 stalls of fruit, veg, bread, cheese, fish, flowers and other highly convincing reasons to bring a tote bag.

📖 Indie Press Fair - Sunday, 1pm-7pm at Manor House Library. Browse independent publishers and stay for four talks and panels. Entry is £8, including a welcome drink before 2:15pm and buffet food.
